Are the Pelican's just wasting time with Gentry?

He just doesn't give me that much confidence for some reason. At least he sets my expectations low.

He seems like a players coach that is heavy on theory and philosophy, but the Xs and Os of player rotations, matchups, play calling, general coaching intuition, and scheming for individual players / teams escapes him.

He is a great assistant, but fails hard when given the head coaching job.

Best that we find someone else to coach the team in the near future, but I am inclined to give him a chance with the new roster and assistant coach we just hired. Hoping it goes well.

People that hate coaches typically hate on strategy or rotations. Gentry did a pretty good job with rotations and staggering AD/DC last year. With the hiring of Finch they now have 2 of the more highly regarded offensive and defensive assistants running the offense and defense.

The primary complaint people had about the team strategy last year was pace, they think we should slow down so Cousins can keep up. People also didn't like having bigs on the perimeter so much. I disagree with people wanting to slow down the pace. Denver was 7th in Pace with an offense centered around Jokic, so I don't think they will or should slow it down. But Finch has already talked about getting Cousins the ball in the post and using AD as the roll man more.

I'm not saying Gentry is a great coach, but he seems like the type of guy that will get out of the way of things that are working and isn't a My Way or the Highway guy like Monty was. He's getting about as much support as he can get and I know a lot of people have zero faith in him, but I don't see how you improve on Gentry + Erman + Finch without getting a difference making coach and those are hard to come by.

Kinda why I was leaning towards Tom Thibadeaux over Gentry. We have pieces right now that are above average on defense like Moore and Hill who were brought in to be those gritty type of defenders.

If we can't keep up with golden state then why try to keep bolstering up the offense instead of focusing on defense- slowing it down etc- like the Grizzlies.

Nobody is doing that right now- they are focused on keeping up with GS.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. We could have Pop and we don't have the personnel to win the whole thing. It's a shame what the NBA has come to.

If this is true, I'll be happy. There aren't very many "needle moving" coaches in the NBA. If he saw the GSW model (having essentially an OC/DC) and said to himself after two years here, "I need help", and went and got Finch, that's a strong move. If you compare him to Pop, Stephens, Carlisle or imo Kerr, yeah he sucks. But if you compare the entire staff, if Gentry allows input like you suggested, it's got potential.

I was all aboard this train at one point, but Thibs prefering Rose to Rubio, having personnel control, and struggling to make a talented young team look decent dampened my Thibs love. The TWolves had the worst body language of any team I saw live last season.

He's okay.
Demps gave him a team with slow down personnel to coach, when it's not his style.
They try to shake spread things out, bench the lumbering Asik (who Demps spent good resources on), draft a shooter, and then...trade for Cousins and slow it down again.
While from a value measurement the Pels got the better end of the trade, it doesn't exactly fit with the spread 'em style.
Demps keeps zigging and zagging with personnel. They'll never get anywhere.
And now he's going to move Davis?

Boston blew the tiniest of shots at AD with the #1 trade. What a mediocre return. At least having the first overall pick gets Demps to pick up the phone.

And I agree, Demps having a job is borderline insanity.

Yes. And that's the most frustrating thing. Wasting another year of Davis here.
