The pick sent to Sacramento is top 3 protected. Meaning that if our pick ended up being in the top 3 we would keep the pick and our 2018 first rounder would go to Sacramento.

We have a condom over our top 3 so that the draft doesn't impregnate sac with a lottery pick baby

If our pick this year ends up in Top 3 we keep it for this year and next years pick goes to them.

I still can't believe the Kings couldn't pull off an unprotected pick lol.

Teams don't know what number a pick is until the end of the season and after the draft lottery so they often put protections on a pick. "I'll trade you this pick as long as it's not in the top 3" The Pelicans did get top 3 protection on the pick they sent for Cousins, so in the event that they both didn't make the playoffs and defied the odds and won the draft lottery, they'd keep their pick this year and then owe next year's pick to Sacramento instead.

The Kings owe their pick this year to Chicago. It is top 10 protected meaning if they are one of the 10 worst teams they get to keep their pick. They've owed this pick to Chicago for so long and been bad for so long that the protections on the pick are about to change terms of the deal from owing a 1st to owing a 2nd. That is part of why they were ready to trade Cousins, so they could tank and keep their own pick.

It means that if the pelicans ping pong balls enter into the raffel and we are picked as 1 of the 1st 3 balls selected then they will put it back in and draw another one

Our luck we will enter the lottery and get the 4th pick which then would go to the Kings!!

I don't think this can happen. If you are outside of the 3 worst records, you either win a top 3 pick or stay in your spot (you would drop a spot if a team behind you jumps in the top 3).

That is impossible.

The only picks that can change, that are "up for the lottery" are 1-2-3. The rest proceed in record order after that.
