Matt Moore recaps the team's offseason on CBS.

LINK

Some interesting things here. He gives the team a B and recaps his thoughts with this:

quote:

This could be an A+, it could be an F. That's true for all NBA teams' offseasons, but it's even more pronounced with New Orleans. The Holiday trade was a big gamble. The Evans signing, gamble. Trading Vasquez and Lopez? Gamble gamble. They're banking everything on a very unorthodox lineup and hoping to find lightning in a bottle. If they can defend, it'll look like a great summer. If they can't, then it's a logjammed mess.

So instead we'll go B. The Pelicans got talent. Does it fit? It can, but it's going to take bold vision and dedication from both the coaching staff and the young players developing.

The Pelicans have placed their bet. We'll see if they land somewhere promising or find themselves lost at sea.

And then over at At the Hive, they place the summer moves in a different context: getting the most out of Anthony Davis.

LINK

quote:

Despite all their recent activity, the Pelicans ceiling remains on the shoulders of Anthony Davis. It would take a man of Davis’s wingspan to display the lengths of his enormous potential. If the inconceivably young star (at least for people who cannot fathom the existence of numbers past 19) can reach his potential, the Pelicans may aspire to heights never before attained in franchise history.

In a recent podcast with Bill Simmons, Grantland NBA analyst Zach Lowe mentioned conversing with executives around the league who believe that the Pelicans are gambling on Anthony Davis becoming an elite player. In addition to bringing their individual production, the Pelicans’ acquisitions of Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans and the decision to retain Eric Gordon may be an attempt to assist the development of Anthony Davis

He then discusses how the summer moves can potentially get more from Davis and push him into superstar territory.

sometimes, i don't get this. what did they want us to do? keep the same lineup heading into next season? win an extra 5 games because of experience and sit in the lottery again?

Draft Noel at 6
Overpay for Martell Webster and KMart

Offseason Grade A

I really don't get how so many seem unexcited about Holiday. Yeah he's got some mediocre stats over the long term if you're looking for negatives, but his fit is great.

same people who were pumping up the year he was having last season are the ones complaining about the move to get him. it's unbelievable. dude's a team player, has a solid offensive game, plays solid defense, and he's a vast upgrade over what we had.

It's all about the perception that you have to build the "right way" though the draft. We didn't do that so now we get blasted.

Probably. That fits the accepted narrative.

Moore gives Holiday love in the article. I think 2 things are at play here:

The trade upends conventional wisdom and its hard for pundits to accept that type of move on a young, lottery team.

The subsequent move for Evans makes the roster very unconventional. ~$35mil for 3 guards is a risk.

I think its a good risk, but still a little scary. Like he says, it will come down to coaching

People that don't like the Holiday move are sub-human

Perfect analysis.

Matt Moore didn't dog the move once in that article, he simply stated the rationale behind the Pelicans' thinking. I think it's a pretty even article that doesn't really provide much "opinion".

It is, but I still find comments like this unfathomable

quote:

The Holiday trade was a big gamble.

I'm still giddy over the trade and it's not like I was a big Holiday fan before. But it didn't take much digging for me to start thinking he's exactly what we wanted at PG.

People keep sayin you have to build through the draft to win. You have to. Oh yeah? Who was the last team to build through the draft and win? The Spurs. Back in like 07. That's it in at least the past 10 years. The only way you compete with a team like Miami or Brooklyn who have compiled superstars is to get your own. That's what Dell is doing. In a league that's going more and more small ball, Dell may just be ahead of the curve.

The smart national guys will say that you don't expect to draft all of your starters or even your top 3 guys. But they would say that you use the draft, especially as a small market team, to build up your assets to develop players so you can pounce when a star becomes available.

What they keep missing is that the Pelicans did exactly that by acquiring Holiday. A C prospect that might not even play this season and a late lottery pick for Holiday? All day long.

I think most guys are just caught off guard that the Pelicans made this move so soon into their rebuild and that they then went big for Evans.

I love how it's called a gamble to lean on guys that have already displayed above average competency in the NBA in favor of holding out for a big with a busted knee and a theoretical pick in an ACTUAL GAMBLING PROCESS.

That irony is bacon flavored.

No shite. I understand where the critics are coming from, but there logic is faulty if you look closely. No doubt, our lineup is a little unconventional when it comes to traditional positions . . . but I like it.

I'm glad we're trying something new for small markets. The only team that has had notable success that I can think of for great drafting is the Spurs. People throw OKC around all the time, but can you remind me of how many titles they've won? And when it came down to paying their draft picks, they had to let one go. Aside from Gordon, we have some very nice contracts for proven producers.

They essentially drew to an inside straight and came up big. But if you think about it, they have "maintained" through free agency.

Lightening in a bottle, and they can't maintain their roster long term.
