Last Night was promising, although towards the end of the 3rd quarter the game was out of reach. We saw boogie AD and Casspi show up and ball out, we realized how weak our guard play is, especially having just traded our entire second line of Hield Evans and galloway. so now we have to sit and watch these guys relearn how to play with each other and to figure out how to maximize our current talent.
I feel we have a ton of potential, we just have to figure out how to get our guards in better positions to contribute, the rockets decided to let AD/DC do their thing, but to take away everyone else.. if Jrue wants his money, he better find a way to score or draw more defenders to create space. otherwise he shrank and disappeared last night..
Fav moments last night
Boogie first score
Hill to Casspi behind the back
AD almost tearing down the rim

Least fav
eric gordon breathing and being eric gordon
Ryan Anderson crying and being a douche, who apparently has decided to attempt to play defense and be a goon..
the bullshite onslaught of free throws in the 3rd where houston took away our energy and created more separation..

so what were your thoughts on the new joins? our current guys? the coaching or lack thereof? what were your fav moments? and what were your least fav moments?
what do you want to see going forward and how do we define success for the back half of this season ?

The positives were:

- that both Boogie and AD both played well and proved they can exist on the court together effectively.

- The defensive hustle from Boogie was something I did not really expect. He and Davis can form a force inside. A few nice help defense situations where both were involved.

The negatives:

- Jrue needs to settle in and find his place. The rockets were pressuring him the second he crossed half court in an effort to keep him from getting the ball into the post which translated to either putting the ball in Moore's hands (gross) or a bad turnover more often than not. This is also a symptom of not having a guard or wing that the opposing team respects.

- Defense was awful. Expected with new personnel but disheartening nonetheless.

- Turnovers. My god the turnovers.

- Shooting. The shooting was god awful. Hopefully it won't continue. I believe it was a bit of an albatross to shoot that badly, but I don't think we have the guys to get that much better which is scary.

Lance stephenson would fix the guard problem off the bench.

Inability to defend the 3. I'd rather give them a wide open midrange shot than a wide open 3

Big thing I noticed early on. Said it multiple times, we're going to struggle if refs swallow the whistle.

Casspi, cousins, and cunningham got mauled repeatedly and got no calls for 5-6 straight possessions in the 2nd. That's when they pulled away. You can't depend on the refs, but when you're getting mauled off your spot leading to a turnover, it matters.

still think Jrue should be at the 2 and let Frazier run the point.. would have totally negated the press that Houston kept putting on Jrue bringing the ball up

Signing Cousins was never going to help us against a team like Houston, especially since Alvin insists on trying to play Houston/GSW's game, instead of slowing down and wearing them down inside. We don't have the personnel to chase guys off the 3-pt line, especially when they're shooting from 30 feet and making them -- looking at you Lou.

My enjoyment other than the ones listed above came from AD subbing out and his replacement was fricking Boogie Cousins and not Asik or Ajinca trying to hold it down for 5+ minutes in the 2nd.

Captain obvious here, but our lack of guard depth really hurt us last night. We rolled out a few lineups that had Hill or Cunningham basically at the 2, and it was uglier than imagined.

Why I'm not worried about last night:
-As much as I hate to say it, the Rockets are a really, really good team
-Along with being a really good team, they are a bad match up for us
-I felt like we got good looks, but our shooters just show below their average
-I would expect Jrue to never replicate that game again

Things that concern me going forward:
-Casspi's injury. God damnit, is the SKC built on a burial ground?
-Lack of shot creators on the 2nd unit. Obviously the 2nd unit, especially at guard, is going to be a weakness when you trade away 3 guards. Hopefully having one of Davis or Cousins on the floor at all time will negate that. I was in favor of a Nick Young deal, as I think he would be a good fit with our 2nd unit.
-There are a lot of kinks to work out, but not a lot of time. Although it won't make or break the franchise, getting to the playoffs the season could go a long way. Get Boogie his first taste of the postseason, and give this core some playoff experience together for next year, when we could/should be a much higher seed.

Eric Gordon gave zero fricks and minimal effort while he was here. That was my biggest takeaway.
