The next DeMarre Carroll

Zach Lowe tries to find the next under the radar FA that will blossom like Carroll has. Lots of guys are profiled, probably of most interest to Pels fans.
He talks about bigs too, including 2 Pels

Jae Crowder (Restricted Free Agent)
Perhaps the league’s closest thing to 2013 Carroll, though Crowder has been jacking 3s since the day he entered the league. He has never hit a league-average mark from deep, and he’s actually gotten worse — 29 percent — since earning a larger role in Boston. But the Celtics have also given Crowder freedom to stretch himself — to try contested 3s, run some pick-and-rolls, and attack off the dribble. He’s fared better than expected, even with the inevitable hiccups, and might be ready for a bigger role on the right team.
Dallas officials were confident they could turn Crowder into an above-average 3-point shooter, and if he can get his corner 3 mark back to where it was last season, Crowder could get there soon. He’s a rugged defender capable of guarding pretty much any wing player, and Brad Stevens has even had him defend both power forwards and centers — including Al Jefferson — as part of smaller lineups. Quicker guards give Crowder issues, but he moves his feet well.
Crowder won’t ever be close to a primary option on offense, but his high-IQ work within Boston’s pace-and-space system has been a refreshing surprise.

• Alexis Ajinca: He produces when he’s not fouling everything that moves. He’s gigantic, he rebounds well, he can pass a bit from the elbows, and he has a nice midrange touch. He’s shooting a preposterous 61 percent on post-ups this season, per Synergy, providing the New Orleans bench with an out when the shot clock is dwindling.
• Jeff Withey: He’s a large human, he blocks shots, he just turned 25, and he has played so little that you could probably get him at the minimum salary. You could do worse with the 15th roster spot.

The Pelicans need to heed the same advice in avoiding lineups that include none of Davis, Tyreke Evans, or Eric Gordon.
someone print this and nail it to monty's front door, please

I'm sure it's been discussed but can Q-Pon be that 3 and D guy? He's been shooting the 3 especially from the corners at a high rate. Does he have the defensive skillset to be that guy?

There have been some games where he was practically useless on defense getting driven on with ease, and he often looks noticeably smaller than some of the guys he's guarding. I think we can be quite happy with him as a 20-25 MPG guy, but we need a bigger defensive wing to handle the guys he can't. Think of it as looking for an upgrade to Cunningham, not Pondexter.

Agreed, Crowder would be a great get this summer.

Boston isnt letting go of Crowder, IMO

Rebuilding teams don't typically pay MLE money for a backup, that's what up and coming playoff teams without cap space do. Boston is still looking for their cornerstones, building bench first is backwards. That being said if Ainge thinks he can be an asset he will try and keep him.

Can't wait to see who does one year deals this summer...because summer '16 is when the Pels shed EG and make a big move.

You left off Aminu in players of note :ducks:
His latest pod with Arnovitz was pretty good too. They talk a lot about positions during awards discussion and how having a good group of 3.5s is a smart way to go. QPon is a 2.5. Crowder would be a great get for the Pels.

I still don't see how he's a significantly better option than Cunningham, especially with Monty's history of overuse.

I was being facetious.
Aminu back here with Monty still around is a bad idea.

you know what though?
who do we have that can defend and play small ball 4?
cunningham?
certainly not pondexter
i would not hate it if aminu came back

Oh I agree. He's a rotation 3/4. The Pels need a guy like him, but too much history here. I'm just not confident Monty will use him in the most effective manner.

If we can't move some salary off our cap, Pels won't get any of those guys. Most likely be picking through the garbage bin again, especially if we have to use the MLE on Ajinca. I'd give Buddinger a look, but that's probably our best option out of players who you could sign for around the minimum.

We have Early Bird Rights on Ajinca so we will have the MLE to use on outside players.

How do the bird rights work? Not the salary cap part, I understand that, but how do we get them for certain players and not others?

How much money do you think KJ goes for? That's who I'd have my eye on.

It's all about time served. Anytime you sign a new contract with a new team the clock on your Bird Rights starts over. It takes 2 years to get Early Bird Rights, which lets you sign a guy for up to the average salary, which under the new CBA is slightly more than the MLE now. Once you hit 3 years you get full Bird Rights.

No clue. I wouldn't expect it to be too much, there have been so many guys that flashed on bad teams their rookie season and then disappeared. I also wouldn't expect this regime to go after him unless he were cheap. I imagine they're looking to get older, not younger.
