The defense wasn't just good, it was dominant in the first quarter keyed not by AD, but by DeMarcus Cousins. He had 7 blocks. It didn't matter if you were Marc Gasol or an attacking guard, you were not getting an easy shot at the rim. 7 blocks! Imagine what the defense would look like with Hill instead of Cunningham and AD not playing through strep throat. That fueled everything that went right for them in the first including a much better offense.

I do want to see if they can look as good for a quarter against Golden State. It's easy to pack the paint against Memphis, if you do that versus the Warriors and give them a bunch of open 3s, you're dead. But AD/DC looked like the have the rim locked down pretty tight.

I found the team to be very active on defense in the first quarter. Lots of hands up trying to get deflections and just generally making life difficult. I think the lack of depth is part of why that fell apart.

Giving up 27 points is special on defense? wow.

Memphis only had 19 with about 3 minutes left in the first, then Crawford came in for Holiday and they scored 8 points in the last 2 minutes of the quarter. Even with the flurry of scoring after Crawford came in, Memphis shot 36% in the quarter and Cousins had 5 blocks while Cunningham, Miller and Allen had 1 each.

First quarter defense was there for sure. Unfortunately the other 75% of the game was straight trash.
