would you offer Gordon + sweetener for Matthews in a S&T, giving Matthews something like 4 years, $55m?

It would be a huge risk with Jrue/Matthews being a big injur risk, but it could also give us one of the best defensive backcourts in the NBA. Both are good 3pt shooters. Neither is aggressive, but that could be perfect for getting AD a higher usage, plus we would still have Reke for getting to the rim.

That injury risk scares me with Jrue already missing so much. I'd like to work with basically what we have now then make the big moves next season when there's a shitload of cash. If there's a good deal for us, sure, but this one is such a high risk to me because of the amount of years that'd be on a contract with a chance of bad health.

Wesley Matthews has played a full season in half of the seasons of his career. This season was the only one he missed over 20 games

Due to a pretty significant injury. Especially for a 29 year old.

Playing 82 games is pretty fricking incredible. In a given year, I'd guess that less than 15% of guys that play more than 10mpg in a season play all 82.

Why? What would we gain out of this. A little bit better defense from 2 guard? Just seems so pointless

Matthews is more than a little bit better defender than EG. Better offensively as well

Matthews career:
114 ORTG
105 DRTG
(+9)

Gordon Career:
108 ORTG
113 DRTG
(-5)

sure

but we are talking about doling out a huge contract (he wants $15m per lol) to a 29 y/o coming off achilles tear
quote:

Dr. Douglas Cerynik and Dr. Nirav H. Amin, both of Drexel University, were co-authors of the paper and kind enough to speak with me this past weekend. Along with their other collaborators, they examined 18 players who'd sustained ruptured Achilles tendons between the years of 1992 and 2012. Of those players, seven never returned to play in the NBA, and 11 came back for at least one season. Eight of those 11 returned to the league for multiple seasons.

The average age for injured players was 29.7, with seven years of playing experience (Kobe's in his 17th year); in the first year back from injury, players played 5.21 fewer minutes per game. That number dropped to 4.42 in the second year back. More tellingly, player efficiency rating (PER) dropped by 4.64 the first year back and 4.28 the second. To understand how severe that drop is, consider: This year, a difference of 4.64 PER is the difference between Kobe Bryant and Ersan Ilyasova.

I liked Matthews, but shite, can we please get away from giving huge contracts to older, injury prone/coming off serious injury players? Let's let other teams do that. We can spend that money better elsewhere

It's just to close of a lateral move for me. If roster setup was different and possibly need 2gaurd then I would but that trade alone I don't like. Just my opinion

Which of our players fit that bill right now? I know that it doesn't help my argument, but the last guy that fit that description was Posey.

Also, Asik and DC (if we re-sign them) are our oldest players at a whopping 28. I think we can use a talented vet with a winning history. Look at how QPon's leadership helped us post all start break. Not saying that Matthews is THE guy, but I think we can really use a talented older vet to help this team out.

Also, I'm really worried about clearing out tons of space for next year's UBER FREE AGENCY, missing out on those max level guys, then overpaying for guys less talented than the likes of Matthews.

How about this: would you do it if Matthews agreed to a 4/$48 declining deal?

I just mean let's not become a team that starts throwing money at those types of guys. I think we have a nice head of steam moving forward... Gordon will be off the books. I just dont want to get in bed with an injured guy making too much money

I like Matthews and all, just because he's an actual 2 way guy. He's a "winning player", but his growth also coincided with LA becoming a perennial MVP candidate, Dame Lilliard arriving, Batum, RoLo etc. He played a role on those teams and now thinks he's going to step in and get paid like a go to guy. In reality youd want him being a role player if he was here too.. EG has finally embraced his role and will clear money next year. Go get Batum or Parsons or get in on Beal
