Should we be a tax team this season?

Obviously seems like our pels are clicking and we could be easily a top 4 seed come trade deadline. Do you think this team should add a quality guy even if it means we’re in the tax? Or just trade Kira, stay under the tax and see how this team finishes? Curious to hear what people think.

Clearly of those options, trade Kira.
Kira brings nothing to the team so if moving him gets us under tax it’s a no brainer.

Tell me who this quality guy we would trade for plays in front of? We already have too many quality players that aren’t playing much.

It's not my money, so I'll say that Gayle should pay the tax. In fact, she should pay tax every year.

Personally I don’t think this is a possibility but say just for example’s sake you go into the tax trying to get a Siakam type player- is that worth it?
Personally I try to get under the tax with Kira trade and see how far this team could go.

The only caveat to that are if you have super young stars that need to just develop and they're just not quite ready to compete. That's not us, we're 2 years late on our window, it's way past go time.

quote:Yes. Not Siakam specifically but a player of his standing, absolutely. We need a consolidation trade. But ultimately, Gayle has to prove she'll pay the tax for the first time ever, and I'll have to see it to believe it.

Because I would argue I haven’t seen what this healthy team can do in the playoffs. Its hard to make trades not knowing the current teams full potential.

We're already way too far behind in what should have been our window to compete.
A team like us generally has a small window of time with a core and the Pels of all teams know how injuries can derail things, it's time to go all in asap.

I would say a lot of these guys don’t have much or any playoff experience and they seem like they’re finally getting it together. I’m not against what you’re saying but I would argue it might take time again for this team to figure it out (especially with Willie as coach). I think thats the other thing- I don’t trust Willie handling adding another significant player and making it work quickly.

This team is playing about as well as any team in the league right now so I wouldn’t want to mess with the chemistry too much. I really hope Griff gets off his obsession of trading Jonas and getting Jarrett Allen and leaves this team alone. If you can trade Kira for a future 2nd or something then fine but leave the team as it is. Larry has the bounce in his step back and the bench is playing lights out for us.

The thing I don't get, all your concerns are 100% valid and I agree with them as concerns.
But I don't see the relevance or correlation to a fan then not wanting to pay the tax.
It's not our money, if we're any level of good, I just don't get why a fan would not want his team to go into the tax to try to get even better.

I mean I guess to make my point clear I would love to pay the tax to get better but I also understand this owner. So that being said, in this specific situation im ok if they choose to just get under the tax for now- but overall I agree to win it all we need to at certain points or years get into the tax.

ok, so who is that 5 we can trade for that makes us a legit contender, or do you want to trade CJ?

I wouldn't say that the Pels are an elite team as currently constructed. They are good and have room for growth internally but have not fared well against elite teams to date. Additionally, contending teams will certainly upgrade at the trade deadline and Pels hopefully don't get caught napping, similar to last year ... meh Josh Richardson acquisition.

To be fair, your initial reasoning that I replied to re: not trading was because we have too many quality players not playing much and not because there wasn't a player in mind to bring back.
But also "too many quality players not playing much" is the exact reason a consolidation trade should be made. Seems counterintuitive to say that is a reason NOT to trade.

What players should get traded in order to get one better piece?
Kira is a given. Outside of that, who? Naji? Dyson? EJ?
Trey would get the best offers but he better not be fricking going anywhere.
We have about 5-6 expensive players in Zion, CJ, BI, Herb, JV, and Nance.
Everyone else makes less than $10m a season and, in a number of cases are still on cost controlled contracts. And without at least one big contract to pair with them (CJ or JV, most likely), we are trading all our depth for one guy who may be our last rotation guy in the playoffs.
I’m not saying “no” outright but what will it cost us to get someone who can help us make that jump?

I'd take a hard look at Allen. He doesn't shoot 3s but is a vertical spacer and can move his feet. That's really the problem with Val, he clutters things up because he can't move quickly to present an option for Zion particularly, and BI to a lesser extent.
