John Salmons, New Orleans Pelicans

2013-14: 78 games (8 starts), 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.7 turnovers, 1.6 fouls, 36 FG%, 77 FT%, minus-0.1 in 22.1 minutes per game

The 34-year-old Salmons recently signed a one-year with New Orleans to provide veteran leadership and shooting. Great news for Reverse Fantasy owners, because Salmons is incontrovertibly in decline — the angle of which can be traced by his field goal percentage, which first pressed the down button in 2009-10. Since then the elevator cable has snapped. He has spent the last two seasons in the below-40-percent sub-basement. In the 2014 “frick Brooklyn” seven-game Raptors-Nets playoff series, Salmons let all of Drakeland down, shooting 29 percent (16 percent from 3), with averages of 2.2 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.8 assists.

Such a questionable signing. Not to mention, we gave him more than league minimum. Smells like a deal for Monty's friend.

Especially for an extra 100K they could of had Granger.. who is 4 years younger than Salmons..

I think it was just another bottom of the barrel signing like Stiemsma. Was Stiemsma a good signing? No. Could we have done better? No.

Which makes him a better trade chip. I actually wonder why they didn't use the entire room exception. Saving money for the next Ajinca/Babbit international mid season pickup?

The Heat are committed for 2 years.

For starters, the Heat only committed $4.25 million to Granger over two seasons—not a substantial investment for a player with his resume.

Not picking up Rivers says Demps hopes to be able to move/drop Gordon *fingerscrossedagain* which means he doesn't want any non essential contracts on the books next offseason.

Utah just nabbed Joe Ingles and Jordan Hamilton off waivers

Seems those are two SFs we could've looked at?

it is possible that the pels already know that gordon will not opt in (he'd be crazy not to, but maybe he just wants out), which would explain not picking up rivers' option

Getting picked up by one of the lesser teams in the league isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. But even if the talent is there, I think Monty being "tired of teaching" played a factor in who was considered. Salmons may be on the team as a replacement for Jason Smith's locker room leadership as much or more than what he can do on the floor. His reputation is one of the hardest working guys in the gym and a real pro's pro. I'm not saying that's the best decision to make, but veteran leadership is an area this team is lacking and it lost 2 of it's top leaders in Smith and Morrow.

Even if they did "know" this, an injury or the cap not getting smoothed could change that in an instant. I think Demps feels the odds are high he can play Rivers like he played Aminu, so if Gordon does opt out he's got $15 million free instead of $10 if they picked up Rivers option and signed a marginally better SF like Granger to a 2 year deal. If Gordon doesn't opt out, he'd still be able to sign Rivers with an exception to the amount he'd have gotten anyway.

Quincy Miller and Earl Clark are both available too. Not saying much, but either guy is better than what they have right now

Not only that, but he was chucking up airballs on the reg in that series as well.

Ha. He got snippy on Twitter with Matt Moore when Moore suggested the Pelicans sign Miller immediately.

FWIW I don't think they make any sf moves. They could have had some of these guys this summer, but chose what they did at sf and extra (I would say unnecessary) depth in the backcourt and frontcourt

Terrence Williams visiting with the Kings. Would be an upgrade too

I have no problem questioning the "corporate knowledge" at the expense of talent strategy, but now you're just throwing out names. Terrence Williams is so good this is the number of games he's played in each season the last 3 years:

24
30
21

Before you tell me Luke Babbitt only played in 27 last year, the point is these guys aren't obvious upgrades. Jordan Hamilton is on his 4th team in the last 8 months. Joe Ingles is so good that he's finally gotten an invite to the league after lobbying hard the past 2 years with no takers.

He is such a blow hard. He cannot get over his "know it all" persona. What's funny is how he talks so condescending about posters wanting the Pelicans to sign a player like Hamilton and then someone calls him out by linking an earlier thread that he said he would be fine with signing Hamilton as a FA signing. The dude must kiss his mirror all day long. He is in love with himself.
