Rondo really is a basketball genius

He loves to study film. He is a basketball junkie. He has a photographic memory. Since moving on from the Celtics, even this past season as he was with the Bulls, I’d oftentimes hear him calling out our plays to his teammates, and getting it correct every single time.
From a Q&A of a Boston writer by Jim Eichenhofer. There's more at the link including talk about how he's an underrated, good finisher at the rim. LINK
What I want to know is how much will Rondo raise the BBIQ of this low BBIQ team? Everybody focuses on what Rondo can't do, and there are some important things he can't do well, but what kind of impact can having a floor general on both sides of the ball have? And I know you can't quantify that and it's hard to discuss, but if this works out I think this might be where Rondo makes the biggest impact on the team.
The past few years it was quite common to focus on the mistakes that often cost us a game and have one of the bad plays down the stretch be something like "Why did he get out of position to go guard that non shooter?" In the Jamel McMillan interview with Kumar, he even made a comment along the lines of you can tell a player like Jrue all of these scouting report details during the week but that doesn't mean he'll be able to remember and use that info in the heat of battle during a game.
I posted the highlight clip in one of the other threads where Rondo blew up an inbounds play by directing Boogie to the right spot in the middle of nowhere guarding nobody when they were in Sacramento. The Boston writer commented multiple times in the interview how Rondo blew up Celtics plays and how that was a big part of the Bulls advantage in the playoffs before he got injured. BBIQ is probably the number 1 non injury complaint about this team in the AD era and Rondo might have more BBIQ than every other player on the team combined.
Sons, I'm excite.

He's going to be better than jrue while making 22 mil less

...nah. And I'm not a Jrue fan.

He and Boogie have passion. Now that can lead us down a bad path some times but it's obvious that they care and as a fan that's really what I want to see.
This might be an epic failure but it will most certainly be entertaining to watch.

Here are some excerpts from a piece done on Rondo after things went south with the Mavs. It talks about some of the bad sides of his personality too. He needs to be managed, but I'm sure having Boogie and Erman will help.

Before Rondo's first playoff series against Atlanta in 2008, the Celtics distributed a 100-page book full of the Hawks' plays and statistics. Rondo took it home, then challenged assistant Darren Erman the next morning: "Quiz me on anything." Rondo nailed every question, until Erman tossed a curveball -- a question about something that wasn't in the book. "frick you," Rondo said. "That's not in there." Once, when Erman was with the Warriors, his team ran a side out-of-bounds play, called C, that he says they'd run maybe 15 times all season. They called the play. Rondo immediately shouted, "C! Rip screen, rip screen!" Erman and then-Warriors assistant Brian Scalabrine looked at each other, stunned: How in the hell did he know that?
A second coach on the court. An advance scout in the locker room. What could possibly go wrong? "You've got to have your shite together," Garnett says. "Rondo would be like, 'Nah, Thibs, that ain't what this is called. It's called this.' Thibs would look down at his little sheet and be like, 'Oh yeah, it is.' " In time, Rivers even allowed Rondo to call games like a catcher in baseball, providing a list of five or six plays Rivers wanted him to run that day. "I've never had to do that before," Rivers says, "but it was awesome." Rondo would study the sheet before games and during timeouts, placing it on the floor between his feet. Even then, Rivers says, after he was given all that freedom ... he'd still deviate

That article makes me even more excited about the signing.
Basically his basketball knowledge is too great that it caused issues.

I really think we upgraded backup point this year. Mentally Rondo seems like the complete opposite of Tyreke which I think is good for this team. It will be great if some of Rondo's basketball IQ can rub off on AD and Jrue.

People throw this around A LOT about athletes. Its rarely ever actually true.

I just hope people don't play that stand in the paint defense on him and clog it up for
Boogie. Gonna make it easy to help on him.

You have to look up and down the roster to look for players with egos and we don't really see any.. other than Cousins who absolutely admires and respects Rondo.
I think we will finally see Leadership that this young team needed for a long time.
This team generally do not have problems matching up with most teams. What they lack is the ability to close games. Rondo could be the solution to that.
I think what we'll see this year is a team that will finally mature.
When we make the playoffs this year, I hope Rondo remains with the team for the foreseeable future.

I don't see how that is possible with bigs as good as Davis and Cousins on the Court together. Both shoot well anywhere on the post so no team will be camping in the post.
Now you may see teams cheat off the perimeter before the entry pass but teams aren't going to camp in the post with both bigs on the floor.

I keep saying it but I am so excited about this pickup. Its jus the sort of move we haven't seen under Demps, and may even be a sign that NOLA could be a destination team, which has been a trait of almost every competitor in recent history (outside of GS maybe 3-4 years ago).
This guy is going to do a lot in getting our bigs easy baskets. When your weakness is perimeter scoring threats, that is a great mitigation. Efficient and craft passer that can also penetrate.

Attention to Detail: Rajon Rondo
video I found on Youtube that was posted a year ago but definitely still worth a watch. it demonstrates how Rondo sees the floor and utilizes his passing ability. helped me really appreciate his court vision
At the end of the day, we are all trying to find a silver lining and it's hard to not be optimistic or go overboard with the sunshine pumping. I'm definitely guilty of it. But objectively, I believe that his biggest contribution will be the intangibles he brings that we've never had before in New Orleans. Basketball IQ, intensity, drive to win, championship pedigree, ability to set up teammates, a dominant/confident (overconfident) personality, plays with a chip on his shoulder, and as Big Baby Davis said "the ability to rub his teammates the right way."
Big Baby has always been a weird guy so who knows what he meant.
Baby said it here 5:35 mark

Have we ever had to go out of our way this much to convince ourselves a player will work out?
In regards to that play where he directed Boogie to guard the 3P line - there was like 2 seconds left on an inbound, the Kings were up by 3 points so obviously they werent settling for 2. One, is this something that's really worth praising? I've seen rec league guys make that call. Two, is Boogie dumb enough to have to be told to guard the 3P line?
All of this forced fluffing of rondo shows how poor of a fit he is

If 2 weeks ago someone would have asked me:
Rajon Rondo
or
Reggie Jackson
?
I love Rondo...

What do you get from being a negative Nancy? If it doesn't work out, will you be happy?

Highlight reels are dangerous. If he was that good all the time why has he become a journeyman? Still he seems like a really good fit for what the Pels are lacking. If I could choose Rondo vs. Rubio I go with Rubio, but beggars can't be choosers and I think Rondo will do well here.
