Because AD can get paid more than $100 million more by staying with the Pels through 4 contracts vs. leaving after 2. If AD cares about his legacy he should think about what he can do with an extra $100 million, that's venturing in to Oprah give away territory.

Let's go in even another direction.

Not selling our first rounder for a major future expense allows us:

Increased future flexibility and additional positive assets that can likely net you a better return in the future then the present because you will have better chips to cash in(cap space, young cheap talent that can be moved easily, future draft picks, ability to absorb contracts in blockbuster trades). And it allows your organization better flexibility to more optimally address wants and needs of the team as they arise without as much unrecoverable risk.

Yes that's exactly what this franchise wants to do, draft 18 year old point guard to pair with AD.....

Do you guys really understand how unlikely it is to wait for a rookie to develop for 3 years, and AD to stick around,?

frick this draft. Start developing a culture or we will become the Kings (cousins kings)

You do understand the future is now right? Guys AD is slowly about to enter is prime. We have Buddy and Diallo can be our 2017 fake rookie for all I care. This draft class is nice, but you guys are truly missing the point about establishing culture and a successful sports brand. AD will NOT wanna wait for a 18 year old to delvop

I agree, lets draft a 19 yr old point guard who would make an immediate impact

If we trade our pick and Atlanta gets Smith with our pick I will cry myself to sleep every night.

AD is still 3 years from his prime. It doesn't matter what he wants anymore. He's locked in and there is no way he declines the new designated vet extension. It's way too much money to leave on the table. So don't worry about appeasing AD or making the playoffs this year. We need to worry about building a team including drafting/developing young talent.

Even if we accept your premise that we don't have time to develop rookies before AD will reach a no return point about willing to stay here, which I assume implies you are not concerned about handing our first rounders out in trades, there is still really good reasons NOT to cash your chips in now on Millsap.

When players like Millsap or Jimmy Butler get traded, the overwhelming majority of franchises do so expecting very specific things in return: clearing of bad contracts, draft picks, young prospects.

Unless you think that point of no return is this offseason, this team is much, much better off building a better war chest of assets so they can get a better haul when they do cash in. A 2nd year Buddy Hield and Diallo plus a possible top 12 pick in a deep draft AND future first rounders AND potentially more cap space to absorb contracts; while your bad assets become more moveable with another year shaved off them.

IMO that is the difference between being able to make a play for a Paul Millsap/Nerlens Noel type vs a DeMarcus Cousins or Jimmy Butler.

The Pelicans really need to hire David Stern to overlook what the FO does and override any stupid trades for Basketball reasons. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have AD right now anyway. Worrying if our current GM is going to frick us for years to come is a reality we have to face everyday he is employed.

Many of You don't like Dell.
But he is not stupid.

Pels are 14-23. With 45 games left. Lets assume everything went great. They win 66% like in 2015. So it is 44 wins. But they wont pass OKC, MEM and UTA.

So at best with sacrificing the future they will earn 8th spot. With chance to being swept by GSW.

Totally makes no sense.
Ok. Want to fight for PO, trade small pieces like for Cole and QPon.

Hope someone within organisation realizes that...

To be clear. I dont believe that with healthy AD this team can earn top8 pick. Barring lottery luck.
I like wins. Like development of Buddy.
But this team needs talent.
Will it be talent on or off the floor. Well. Does not matter.

So even with his job on the line Dell will think at least twice...

This is all logically correct, but you analytics nerds (gallows and Anderson voice) are forgetting the most important thing about winning:

Building culture. The process of developing and drafting clearly creates a " wait until next year, tank, hey it's OK to lose because next draft class is loaded!" Mindset when in the end has postive asset's and long term implications, but yet you guys ignore the current state.

The current state is, loser mentality, careless mentality towards winning which players will (look at Jrue Holiday lackadaisical play in crunch time) low number of fans and game attendance, and a bad Aura around the franchise with free agents .

All of these things SHOULD be factor in, yet you guys are only showing one side of the "draft and stash" philosophy which makes it hard for me to respect it. Also what makes you guys so sure AD wants three more years of sucking? Like what superstar wants to live like that?

Let's thank from AD perspective:

Best player on a bad team, with a limited fan base, sub par talent, young players who will take time to groom, frustrating losses, while he watch past teammates leave this franchise and immediately win. Do you guys really ignore all of this??

The new CBA and AD missing out on the Rose provision may very well have been a blessing I'm disguise. AD has mentioned that missing out on that 25 million bothers him and that may cause him to be more inclined to resign for the super max here.
