I haven't seen this discussed in a while. My question is: this guy has sat the bench for two years with knee injuries. At what point can the team get out of the contract, move him, cut him, something?

Or, do we have to just suck up his dead weight until the expiration of his contract.

The NBA is not like the NFL. Contracts for the vast majority of players are fully guaranteed. There is not much benefit to cutting Pondexter other than it frees up a roster spot. There are options like stretching his contract where you spread the hit of the contract over multiple years, but his remaining contract is so small that's of practically no value.

This will be the last year of his deal which mean's he'll probably be included as salary filler in a trade at some point. And there's no need to hate on a guy that in hindsight may have sacrificed his career to get this team to the playoffs. He only makes about $3.5 million a year so there are much bigger team building obstacles on this roster than Pondexter.

All of the hate should be directed toward our medical staff, who at the very least issued terrible information with the false recovery times and at the very worst ruined QPon's career.

The worst part of it all, atleast to me, is that he would be the perfect type of player to add to this current team. A 2/3 that plays good defense, shoots the ball well and is a good leader and teammate. We need a good shooting wing badly and we have a good one on the roster, he just can't get healthy. I feel for him.

He thinks he'll be ready for the 17-18 season, or at least that's the plan.

What is he going to say then ?
I want to come back but probably I am going to have a setback, like million times earlier?

He is trying like hell. Hopefully he will recover.

At worst he will be cut/salary filler. But the best for this team is to have him on the floor.

But in the best case dont expect a lot from the guy who had not played since 2015...

Gentry did a Q&A with Jim Eichenhofer and they talked a bit about QPon. He doesn't sound like someone that's expecting him to play.

quote:

I’ve never coached the team – not for one day – that we played (against in the 2015 playoffs) when I was on the staff at Golden State. Not for one day. That team was never healthy, which is the most frustrating part.

The guy that I really thought was important to that (2014-15 Pelicans) team, who I’ve never coached for one day, was Quincy Pondexter. I thought he was kind of a glue guy and did a lot of things. He added shooting out on the floor. So that’s been really tough.

...I don’t think there is any doubt about that at all. Those kinds of players have become very valuable, guys who are multi-position players, guys who can be a stretch-four kind of player. The ability to give a team that option to play small is another aspect. Quincy fits the bill for all of that. It’s just unfortunate what he’s been going through. I hope that some kind of way he can get himself back to a position where he’s playing. But it’s been a tough road for him – I’ve got unbelievable sympathy for him in what he’s gone through and how he’s trying to get back on the floor.

This statement is 100% true but coming from him it just sounds so defeated and weak.
