After watching Hawk and Dyson lately, I have to admit Herb, Trey, Hawk and DD… the Pels deserve some credit for solid picks without much fanfare or national recognition.

Hard to have fanfare when nobody can watch the team. But I agree we have a great young core and are possibly the deepest team in the entire league.

Definitely. Add Alvarado to the list and they have added 5 rotation guys in the last 3 drafts. That’s huge and impressive work by the FO. Wish they could have snuck a defensive big amongst those picks though.

The other team that seems to get real value from its middle of the round picks in recent history is the heat.. Jamie Jaquez Jr looks good.

Wait. You mean Griff keeping our picks > Dell Demps trading away all our picks for crap players like Asik and a broken Boogie Cousins ? LOL

If we are talking griffin Era in general, kind of have to bring up Jax, Kira, naw. The long term stock is just slightly up.

Bruh NAW had his moments and is still a decent enough player to be in rotations. Hard to fault what they saw there.

Kira had a serious 1 1/2 yr injury at 18 y/o. Potential or not that’s just unfortunate.

No one could have expected Jax to just not care about basketball even if they knew he was that dumb.

You have to give Griff Zion if you are going to add these 3 in. So yeah he’s doing very well.

GTFOH… every team misses. We’ve gone from fragile to one of the deepest teams in the league. FO gets an A for what they’ve built. Now, can Willie win with it? Can the top dogs actually live up to their calling? Those are the main questions left.

I judge drafts by production that the franchise that made the pick got from that player, thats how i feel i would have to judge if i were an owner or the gms boss, the people who actually have to grade their employees performance. That's all that really matters in the end, a gm can still get fired even if things didn't bounce their way with a particular player. Doing well in trades and free agency has nothing to do with drafting ability, so not sure what that has to do with discussion at hand, "recent drafts"

I have no problem giving grif and FO kudos for last 3 drafts, they knocked it out of the park if we are grading it today. But then going a step further and saying Griff is an amazing drafter in general, comparing one FO Era to another, is kind of short sighted in my opinion, at least without mentioning the negatives, and that is the post I responded to. You have to mention the bad with the good. Hopefully they keep it up and the good significantly outweighs the bad without argument after another couple of solid years.

we have absolutely hit on Trey, Herb, and Hawk... Daniels is still a little iffy, for me, but getting Alvarado definitely helps...

the only real "need" that we will eventually have to address, and i'd like to see it sooner rather than later, is a replacement for JV, b/c he ain't getting any younger

Getting what we have gotten from herb from his draft spot, that's gotta be the #1 pick they've made, quite incredible.

What you’re missing from that perspective is the extra context of the Pels clearly changing the type of player they target after all of the early failure. That suggests what they are currently doing is very repeatable. That does let you discount the previous misses some in terms of looking forward and if the team heading in the right direction.

It's time for people to get over the 2019 and 2020 drafts. We are in a much better place because of it. We not only shifted our philosophy in the way we draft but it has also defined the pelican prototype.

Didn't we trade NAW and DiDI for CJ?

Those were in NO way wasted picks.

No one hits 100%. Jax and Kira suck. NAW is a big rotation piece for the #1 seed in the west, which is a pretty decent outcome for the 17th pick

Griff deserves a lot of credit for Hawkins. But man he was going all in for Scoot- the best thing to happen this season was Griff failing to pull that trade off. It would have completely screwed up this franchise.

Honestly, of all Griff's picks, only Jax was a character red flag.

Kira is terrible but seems ok enough.

But drafting older, more mature guys with a transferable skillset - shooting (Trey, Hawkins) and defense (Herb, Dyson, Jose), has definitely paid off.

This new type of player seems to coincide with us bringing in Gar Foreman as special advisor. Does anyone know if he's still with us? He always was one to go for veteran college players when he was the GM of the bulls, seems like since we hired him we've started to go that route for the most part (not Dyson obviously)

Yes, he's still with the team.
