The New Orleans Pelicans sent out a release on Sunday afternoon stating that general manager Dell Demps' news conference that was initially scheduled for Monday afternoon has been rescheduled to a later unspecified date.

Pelicans officials offered no explanation or what prompted the change. League sources still say Demps is expected to return, but the Pelicans fan base are not in favor of the decision. ....

Loomis and Lauscha are too busy with the draft to deal with the bastard stepchild

Yep. That's likely the reason. Although if Dell is coming back and this is just an ordinary end of the year presser, I'm not too sure why Mickey and Lauscha need to be involved very much...

Probably. That was my first thought when the obvious emotional wishful thinking subsided.

That doesnt make sense tho. Like oncealurker said, if Dell was set to return why would they stall? At least this shows theyre at least thinking about it.

This may not show more than a travel delay. Unless they didn't like the heat they took the way Monty got fired after giving him a public pat on the back, I don't see why they'd stop Demps from giving a presser.

If I am playing devils advocate, 2 alternate rationales pop to mind:

1.) The draft is insanely important while this public conference in comparison is not. They want to show a unified front after a turbulent season but can't afford the dedicated time to prepare and commit to it right now.

2.) Unforeseen circumstances we aren't privy too. Family illness, travel issues, internal delays, emotional distress due to Prince's passing etc.

We all assume Loomis and Co. think they need to quickly put to bed rumors and speculation if there isn't truth to them but maybe we are assuming wrong and they are just unconcerned and thus don't find it necessary to even make a public vote of confidence.

So we get another offseason of Demps making moves that backfire more than a '64 chevy on a cold morning?

I mean even if he is gone we aren't out of the woods yet. We may just replace Demps with another guy that has even more moves that backfired on his most recent resume.

Don't care. I would rather have the hope of a new GM working out.

I would post the screen shot of the group text between Me, Heady, MM, and Driveman, but they told me to hold out because you guys don't deserve inside info.

I had coffee with TulaneLSU this morning, and he told me the real scoop. I promised not to tell, though.

The problem with this scenario is it's not like they weren't aware of the draft date at the time this presser was originally scheduled. If they know the draft is insanely important, they would schedule this presser for a later date. And it's not like the need for a united front suddenly arose in the past few weeks, things have been turbulent for months now.

first of all, the NFL draft should have no affect on the Pelicans timeline. Doing so is idiotic. Neither team should take priority over the other.

Secondly, if the draft is the reason for canceling it, why schedule it for Monday at all? Seems likely there is something else at play here.

Like I said, I'm just playing devils advocate, which I think is wise because no one really has a microphone in Loomis's office so any sort of definitive assertions about this delays meaning is silly.

I mean the draft war room is a fluid process. Intel changes, deals get offered, work gets backed up, decisions aren't made optimally, shite happens. Its a reasonable explanation even if it may arguably be less likely then others people have mentioned or speculated.
