Our new whipping boy, put up a Draymond triple single.

9, 8, 7

Plus three steals and a block.

Best game he's had in a long time

Gotta give him his due

I don’t know what to think about Larry. Is he washed, had he been playing hurt and we didn’t know about it? Is he just good in certain matchups and the perfect 3rd big that fills the holes JV and Larry can’t would solve all of our problems?

Yes 100% for him and Val. Thats why their minutes and production vary so widely game to game.

Why does it seem like this was the first time in a long time that we actually game-planned that position. Contingency planning is not our strong suit.

“If this doesn’t work, let’s quickly shift to that” should be a part of every plan. Obviously more general with positions 2-4 and sometimes 1 because we only have one true 1, but should be really easy with only two 5s playing on the roster.

Right. They play differently and fit different needs.

Larry set a lot of good screens last night, sometimes in the paint to free Zion up to curl to the basket, sometimes then setting another interior screen to free up someone for 3.

I never understand the threads after a 1 game sample size (good or bad). I want everyone on this team to do great but 1 good game after 10 mediocre doesn’t deserve a gloat thread

I feel we did the complete opposite last night with the 5, and it was a contingency plan.

We stunk it up early, Willie called a timeout 4 minutes into the game and we ditched Val. If the offense was rolling 4 minutes in and Val had 6 points, I highly doubt we would have done that.

It does not seem like we would ever go into a game with the plan to play Val 4 minutes then never again.

That's what we did last night.

Sorry, that's what I meant. Our overall game plan should always contain an easily identifiable contingency plan to shift to. We saw how our opponent was playing the 5, and significantly shifted package and style.

Seems like this is a one-way street often at the 5, and JV seldomly gets the reciprocal treatment when feeding him seems to be working.

Gotcha, and I tend to agree.

And we probably do change the gameplan sometimes, but IMO it's usually for the worse. Like we Val gets 0 2nd half minutes but Nance plays like shite on offense and defense. Sometimes you need a contingency plan to the contingency plan lol.

To me what has changed recently is that Willie has discovered a 3rd center option, no center. This is a good development, they need to figure out how to make this work to have the 5 best players on the court more often.

That would be every night. He's especially adept at setting back screens to free up a shooter fpr an uncontested three. And unlike Jonas, he doesn't usually get called for moving screens. The only one last night was when he smacked Booker coming across, which was more than worth the foul.

Very good all around game by him but he's too inconsistent. Goes from looking like a legit small ball 5 to "I have cement in my shoes" one game to the next. Upgrade the position next season.
