From Zach Lowe:

quote:

5. New Orleans Pelicans

It feels like these guys should rank higher, given Anthony Davis’s potential free agency a year from now, questions about the surrounding parts, and new rumors that Joe Dumars could still arrive in some supervisory big-picture role above GM Dell Demps — rumors that don’t appear to be heading anywhere for now.

This is more a reference to a rumor than a rumor, has anyone seen anything else on this?

I haven't heard a thing about this, but I was just thinking this morning how quiet it was.

Loomis brings in a basketball mind for Demps to report to as opposed to reporting to Loomis directly?

I believe the newness is in Dumars as Demps' boss. All the previous rumors have been Dumars as GM.

I mean...I can live with that I guess. Not ideal, because I don't want Dumars involved at all, but as long as he's not GM... Iguess?

I think this would mean theyve decided its too much work for Loomis to control both franchises.

It kind of is, or at least the schedules overlap too much. If they were going to replace a coach or GM, he'd need to be in hiring mode at the same time he needed to be in NFL Draft mode.

Yeah exactly.

But man, if Thibs is available and we aren't all over that, I'm going to cry.

Which means there are some tears in my future.

Yeah I think we have known for awhile that they consulted with him on several occasions. But there does seem to be some smoke here.

I'm not as down on Joe Dumars as most, basically if Dumars drafts anyone one but Darko in that top slot we are calling him one of the greatest GM's of all time. But he didn't and he spent the rest of his career trying to make up for it.

I've also always said Demps philosophy reminds me a lot of Joe Dumars. Ironically, Dumars always thought the draft was a crap shoot and focused most of his efforts on getting vets on his team. Similar to what Demps has done.

Still, not sure if I want Dumars to screw up what Dell has going here.

Also, just reading between the lines, I think Dell and Monty really do hate each other. Just guessing, but I think Loomis might want a third party mediator between the two of them. If that was Dumars' role, I would be more okay with it.

Makes it seem almost inevitable if he was really traveling with Loomis and co. to Saints road games. I guess Demps' boss would be the lesser of two evils, he wouldn't be GM. He'd still essentially be making all the decision though.

Sucks for Dell, I think he deserves more time. Time without Dumars breathing down his neck. I could see him walking.

Dumars did a horrendous job for the last several years of that job.

Dumars scares me because the league he was successful in is nothing like the league we're in today. And its evolving FAST.

The last thing I want is for Dumars to come in with that old arse, slow it down, walk it up and get stops, Pistons philosophy.

If we're looking for some new cutting edge, innovative shite, Dumars is the last guy we want.

His coaching hires since 2009: Michael Curry, John Kuester, Lawrence Frank, Maurice Cheeks , John Loyer

If your boss veto's every recommendation you make you won't have a job for long. If they can get on the same page on the general direction of things, I think Dumars could be a useful resource for Demps. "GM1 hates GM2, make them think they're bidding against each other" type of advice.

Ex-fricking-actly.

The league passed him by completely and he did not adjust at all. Almost every move he made post championship run was a disaster. And his coaching hires...woof.

If its just a senior advisory role, but Dell or whomever the GM really calls the shots, fine. But I don't want Dumars actually making decisions.

This is largely a top-down approach and the Pistons have a couple of old-school guards in the top chairs. I've never heard Joe Dumars utter the word "analytics," much less apply one. Maurice Cheeks, asked about advanced statistics earlier this year, responded with something about 3-point percentage. They govern by eyeballs

Lawrence Frank was attuned to analytics and who/what succeeded/failed under specific conditions or stimuli. He had a coaching staff that was attuned to it, too. Cheeks' coaches are, too. Cheeks has admitted his coaches would inundate him with such statistical analysis if he showed interest in it, which he admits he generally doesn't. Cheeks' stated approach is that he'll listen to anything interesting that's brought to him. If you bring him good information, he's more likely to listen. That's the analytics department here.

League's moving in one direction and Dumars is still doing Bad Boys Pistons documentaries.
