Would you say that missing out on the Wolves ended up being a good thing?

IDK, there are just too many variables to consider. The wolves ownership sucks, but who can predict if they would have sold to better owners or not. We would have missed out on a decade of Shinn though.

I think that the Benson situation is pretty damned stable ,though (despite his age). And the Hornets came here 9 years later with a pretty good talent base. The Wolves got KG 2 years after the TP article. If we'd have landed him, I think we'd be fine. But if we sucked for ~5 years after getting the Wolves, I'm worried about whether we'd have a team at all right now.

You're right about the too many variables, though. I'm just a bit buzzed and had forgotten that the whole Wolves situation happened for a long time, so felt like talking about it.

Well I am not going to be of much help. I was 4 when that article ran and my family was Nuggets and Broncos fans (dad lived in Co for 20 years before moving back to La).

I think they leave after Katrina because the relative newness of the Hornets were a big reason why the league wanted to keep them here.

Also it'd be interesting to see how a bball team being here earlier would've played on Benson in the 90's. He starts rattling for new stadium a lot sooner, especially once KG starts stealing the spotlight from the Ditka/Haslett Saints.

Good points. If we want to assume that we still land KG, I think NOLA is more of a basketball town than we are right now. Good point about Katrina, though. Having the Hornets in the city for only 3 years would have been a mess, but if the team had been here for ~12 years, the owners could have said that we had our chance and weren't a good NBA city.

On June 15, 1994, the National Basketball Association's franchise relocation committee voted unanimously to block the sale of the franchise to Top Rank resulting in the Timberwolves remaining in Minneapolis through at least the 1994–95 season.[17] Top Rank's offer was rejected by the league due to questions surrounding their financing plan. The $152 million purchase price would have been paid for through $40 million from unknown investors; up to $76.25 million in loans from banks that had yet to make commitments; and $50 million or more from undisclosed sources based on projected revenues from the un-built arena in New Orleans.[17] Also, the league filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis seeking an injunction against any transfer of the team from Minnesota

With Gayle taking over when Tom passes, I think the ownership will remain stable for a number of yrs.

I'm really worried about estate taxes (which are pathetic) fricking everything up, though. A lot of Benson's worth is tied up into the Saints/Pels. Hopefully his lawyers do some work and protect her.

The Wolves haven't won shite and AD has a chance to a better player than KG and is a better scorer than KG ever was now, so yes.

Lawyers feel free to correct me, but can't Benson just:
1. Put assets into trust
2. Name himself president of the trustee
3. Name a succession plan
4. Tell Uncle Sam and the IRS to kiss his hairy balls

IDK if that is the exact way to do it, but I do know there are ways to legally get around paying the estate tax you just have to do hve good lawyers and good accountants to make it all work.

top rank of louisiana was the proposed ownership group that the twolves were to be sold to. they agreed to buy the wolves for $150MM+, which prompted the T-P story that came out the next day

bob arum (the boxing promoter) was the lead guy, with a bunch of shadow investors, who turned out to not have any of the money that was promised. the bid was based on loans and a proposed tax/arena proceeds, which the NBA quickly saw was complete bullshite, and blocked the sale

That financing package is a joke. And it's laughable that a newspaper from a semi-major market ran with that info and essentially based an entire issue on it.

As much as it pains me to say so, I agree. I had just moved back to N.O. from L.A. (where I had Clippers season tickets and they had made their first trip to the playoffs). I was stoked that I'd have a local NBA team to follow. I took a closer look and knew it wasn't going to happen. On the other hand, I'm glad things turned out the way they did. Much more secure for the long run.

to be fair it's not like the sale announcement to top rank came out if the blue...it had been news for months prior to that, ever since the lease agreement at target center fell thru. T-P actually did a good job of reporting the story as it developed; this was back when they were an actual newspaper with actual reporters

when the sale was announced, they were ready with their big splash story. It came out in the weeks following that top rank didn't have 2 nickels to rub together
