I'm not sure why we can't just do the same playoffs as they always do, and a play in for 7/8 seeds if they want to invite 20 teams. Not sure it really matters, but it would certainly increase the arguments of the asterisk on this title.

Nonetheless, this would be fun. Drawback is that we'd likely see some upsets and good teams miss out on the 8 team playoff bracket based on small sample sizes, but I still think it would be fun as hell just because it's something different.

It would definitely be fun, but i don't think it's really fair to the Bucks or Lakers if they were to draw a group of say the Celtics, Rockets/Sixers, Mavericks, Blazers.

It would be awesome but Eastern Conference owners aren't going to go for this.

Would be better then March Madness. Imagine our Pelicans upsetting a few teams and winding up in the final 8.

If they're seeding in a normal way going by records, here's how the groups would likely play out:

MIL
SAS
HOU
IND

LAL
SAC
OKC
PHI

TOR
NOP
MIA
DAL

LAC
POR
UTAH
MEM

BOS
ORL
DEN
BKN

It wasn't fair for AD and RP to force their way to LA either. Im not saying that they should face tough competition in the first round but I also could care less if they did.

With a 4 team group and 6 game sample size, it wouldn't be remotely surprising for the Pels to crack a top 2 just based on randomness of the sample size.

That's not how it would work the way KOC laid it out in the article.

There would be 5 tiers of 4 teams based on record, with tier 1 being the the 4 best teams and tier 5 being the 4 worst. A random draw would pull 1 team from each tier into 4 5-team groups

Add more drama to it:

Don't make it random. Let the best overall record pick their group (with the same rules: 1 per tier).

2nd best record gets to pick from the remaining teams, and so on.

Welp, that's what I get for not reading the article

I don't like this idea though, just go straight standings for the groups.

Yeah this has been mentioned. If it was televised it would get huge ratings.

And some serious bad blood between teams.

Now that's an awesome idea.

Have the best record pick from tier 2. then let the tier 2 teams pick their tier 3 teams, etc.

This sounds like a great idea actually going forward. More exciting as well. Chances are, the top teams will generally advance anyway.

what i love about the NBA playoffs, is that the best team will always win the series. they might not be the most talented team, but the best team, players and coaches, will win. How teams adjust after each game is what makes the NBA playoffs great.
I don't like the idea of the groups b/c it isn't fair to the top teams, even though i hate the Lakers and want them to fail miserably, it would not be fair if they were to be in a group of say the Celtics, Sixers, Mavs, Blazers. playing group stages like that doesn't allow teams to really focus on their opponent and game plan for them, and that's what makes the playoffs so much different than the regular season, and it's why the Rockets can win 50 games every year and then choke in the playoffs every year, b/c their shtick doesn't work when you play a 7 game series and their opponent has time to break them down and devise gameplans against them.

What i think should happen is this.
Let the top 7 teams from the west, which all have a winning record, play a round robin against each other. that will get them to 70 games, and it will help decide seeding while letting them warm up. Let the rest of the west teams minus the Twolves and Warriors, who can stay at home for the rest of the season, play a round robin playing each other twice, so each team plays 10 games, and best record gets the 8 seed, best record being their overall record, not the 10 game record. I eliminated the Warriors and TWolves b/c playing 10 games still doesn't allow them a chance to make the 8 seed.

East is a little trickier b/c their non playoff teams are terrible and have no business fighting for the 8 seed. I would say just take the top 8 teams and let them play each other and let the seedings fall where they fall with their top 8. I guess if you want to let the Wizards join the group, that's fine. I guess the rule would be if you're not withing 6 games of making the playoffs, you can't play.

Then start the playoffs as normal. Everyone got to play meaningful basketball, and we got some entertainment from the teams trying to make the 8 seed in the west.
All the games need to be nationally televised, and they need to figure out how to split all the money to make the local markets happy that didn't get their 70 games broadcasted.
