You first have to understand the anatomy and biomechanics of a great toe and how much of an impact it makes in an athlete's first step/jump off. Ingram has a grade 2 MTP sprain (Turf toe). This is a sprain of the first MTP joint caused by forced hyperextension of the great toe as it strikes the ground. It is diagnosed within a scale of 3 grades.

This issue can linger for months; and by months I mean 6-12. Although most grade 3 sprains take this length of time to heal, it is very possible to reinjure it simply by pushing off of it when getting out of bed. This is one of the toughest and most over-looked sports injuries because it sounds so simple. This is nothing to the extent of a lingering hamstring or quad injury in terms of debilitating, but it is pretty close. The joint will heal, but is usually never the same after this injury - which is fine. Think of it like the infamous "plantar fasciitis" which I am sure some of you had to deal with in your lifetime. How long did this take to heal - weeks or months? Sure you were able to use your feet and even run, however, you paid the price for it after.

In terms of his return, my guess would be sooner rather than later.. As generic as that is, there really is no timeline. It goes by how the patient feels, not what the textbook says (ironically). Based on his recent videos, I would say he is close - maybe 2-3 weeks? I suspect he will come back right before or around Zion's return. Why push through this injury and risk further damage? Let it heal now so that we won't have to deal with it again later.

And yes, he is close to returning, but all it takes is one forceful/wrong step to create a 1-2 week setback. As a player he will be fine.. I know it is annoying to fans with how conservative our staff is, but once the playoffs start, it will be a different ball game. Lets get healthy so we can finally play as a unit.

Hope this is informative to some.
Go Pels!

The best ability is availability. And that is across the board.

Thank you for the information, but has this:

Ingram has a grade 2 MTP sprain (Turf toe).

Ever been confirmed by anyone? The only information available has been a toe bruise or "contusion". I obviously defer to you though, very informative.

Maybe next year the medical staff can come from LCMC/LSU/Tulane partnerships…

Now do the fake concussion where he barely got touched by a teammate.

Unless you have some inside information, there has never been a report of a grade 2 sprain.

This is definitely true, but the timeline of how long he's been out leans more towards this.

If it's truly just been a bruise all along, that doesn't fully make sense as I understand it to be out THIS long, which is much much longer than lesser injuries for a toe.

Its almost certainly the case, but the Pelicans consistently do themselves no favors whatsoever with their reporting on injuries.

Reporting it as a bruise, never really changing that, and Ingram being out for 2+ months does him no favors PR wise.

Tell the truth, be open and honest with the injury and timeline.

Everyone wants to blame BI, but we know that the team has a history of lying about injuries. It wasn't a freaking bruise.

I've said that since day 1, got a lot of push back but not sure it's really up for debate at this point.

The team called it a sprain/contusion when it happened, the dropped the sprain part off like a week later

here's updates on ingram from andrew lopez's twitter over time:

Nov 25: Pelicans say Brandon Ingram (left great toe sprain) will not return to tonight’s game at Memphis.

Nov 27: Willie Green says Brandon Ingram (left big toe) will be day to day. Says it’s a contusion/sprain.

Green says everything structurally was fine with Ingram’s imaging.

Tomorrow's injury report for the Pelicans:

- Brandon Ingram; doubtful (left big toe contusion) (injury is referred to as only a contusion from this point)

Nov 28: Brandon Ingram (left big toe contusion) is OUT

Dec 6: No practice today for Brandon Ingram or Herb Jones, according to Willie Green.

However, Ingram was doing more work than he has been. We at watched him going through shooting drills after practice.

Dec 11: Willie Green says he’s extremely hopeful team will get Brandon Ingram and Herb Jones back on the upcoming road trip.

Dec 13: Have been told Brandon Ingram will be re-evaluated in a week.

Experienced a small setback during his rehab process. Imaging is still clear. Team just being cautious with his return.

Dec 21: Brandon Ingram will miss the next two games at least, Willie Green says.

Says Ingram is getting better but process has been slower than anyone would have liked.

Dec 26: Lopez posts video captioned "Brandon Ingram getting shots up pregame" and looks healthy

Dec 27: Willie Green on Brandon Ingram: “He got on the floor just a bit. He’s doing some player development stuff. Still doing some conditioning. He’s progressing but not there yet.”

Dec 31: With Ingram’s return looming, Willie Green will have some rotational choices ahead of him.

Jan 3: Brandon Ingram is doing more in practice. But not there yet.

Jan 4: Brandon Ingram has braids.

I missed this part while I was on vacation. That's depressing.

Don't think the team ever reported it as a sprain. A reporter referred to it as a sprain if I recall.

Also of note, around the same time (12/7) Devonte had what can be assumed the same injury, and I don’t believe he missed a game

Devonte’ Graham (right great toe sprain) is AVAILABLE for tonight’s game vs. Detroit

That is not an injury report. It is the PR estimating an injury when a player leaves the game. After examination is when Willie said there was no structural damage and referred to it as a contusion. Since then, the official injury report has consistently referred to it as a contusion. Obviously, it must be much worse but the team will not update the actual status or injury.
