The Washington Wizards announced today that forward Martell Webster had successful microdisectomy surgery yesterday to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. He will begin the rehab process immediately and is expected to miss approximately three to five months before resuming basketball activity.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins Jr. in Los Angeles following consultation with team doctors earlier in the week. Webster sustained the injury during a routine workout at the Wizards’ practice facility last week.

This isn't Webster's first back surgery either. Too bad, he was finally looking healthy after an injury riddled career. Not only was he a potential target at SF, this injury makes it more likely that Washington keeps Ariza in effect taking 2 targets off the board.

Can be relatively serious surgery, especially considering his previous history.

That effectively kills two targets for us: Webster and Ariza.

Dell is going to need to be really creative.

frick, that hurts a lot.

TigerinATL, what do you think about us just trying to get under the cap, make the playoffs with whatever squad we have after we get under the cap, and then making moves next year/season after next with Gordon's expiring contract? Seems like the only alternative is dealing Ryno and I'd hate to do that when we've possibly got the best big man trio in the NBA.

Someone is getting traded in order for us to be able to sign Asik.

Might as well try and get some assets out of the deal.

Yeah. Ugh. I hate all our options. AFAIK our three options are dealing Ryno, dealing Rivers, or basically saying "frick depth" and ditching a bunch of scrub players. The best one out of that bunch is dealing Rivers imo, if Russ Smith turns out to be a good one he should be able to take Rivers's role well enough.

But I don't wanna deal Rivers, even, he looks like he'll do his job well for us.

How much over the cap can we go? (and where can I get a crash course on the cap? lmao this shite is so complicated)

Isn't Asik a free agent next year? If so, we will have to resign him so we need some room to do so.

We really have to get rid of Gordon.

Right. Our intent is not to rent him.

I'm not quite sure what your suggesting, it sounds like the "Dump Rivers and scrubs in a way that we don't even keep our MLE and bird rights on Aminu/Smith/Roberts." If that's what you're saying I'm against that. McNamara at BSS wrote a nice article detailing the most likely options available for clearing the cap space we need to complete the Asik trade. LINK /

Wow, man, I didn't even realize we had any options with Gordon. That stretching concept almost sounds too good to be true

Its really a last scenario. Its on the books for 5 years. That's a long time, even if its a small amount.

I agree with corndeaux, though. I would like to test out this front court before Dell tries to deal Anderson. That big man rotation needs to see some action. I won't be mad if we can flip him for a Jeff Green, but turning Ryno into a subpar SF to free up space would be pretty disappointing. Davis, Asik and Anderson will be hard to stop for any team. Might be enough to shade our weakness at the 3 for a while until we free up a little room.

I hope we sit tight if the right deal doesn't come along. We shouldn't rush into anything else.

I mean yeah, if you can trade Gordon you do that before you do this, easily. But a small cap hit like that wouldn't worry me much even if it's going to be there for a while. It's a lot better than losing Anderson or Rivers IMO.

Not so rare. 95% of my edits are typically to fix typos like that.

The fact that we heard repeatedly the team was aggressively seeking a 1st and then didn't get one makes me think Demps currently doesn't have a set plan. I'm sure he has plenty of options he's considering, but I think he's waiting for some other shoes to drop before committing because you never know what will shake loose if Love, Melo or LeBron get traded, see Mike Dunleavy dumping as suggested by corndeaux. He could plug the SF hole and is a good enough 3 point shooter that maybe you trade Ryno and go with Jason Smith as the 3rd big. Or maybe we're waiting on a Rondo trade to Sacramento to send Gordon and Rivers to Boston as rumored on draft night.

IMO the reason nothing happened on draft night isn't because we couldn't make a deal, we just couldn't make a good deal. I'd find it hard to believe that you couldn't find a team to take Austin Rivers and voidable contracts.
