Here are some comments a Sacramento blogger tweeted about Salmons.

quote:

Greg Wissinger @gwiss · 52m

@usnfish at this point he's underrated. Pro's pro. Works hard, good guy, he's fine as a vet providing depth

if you expect to be a playoff team, he's the type of bench guy you want to have.

he's by going to disrupt anything, he'll show up in great shape, he won't complain.

he's not "veteran leadership", but he's good veteran depth

if he's a starter, definitely a little more concern. But you have enough other weapons. Problem is when he's the primary weapon

All that sounds good to me. With the money we had available, expectations need to curtailed a bit.

If Salmons is ever the 'primary weapon' this year, things have gone terribly, terribly wrong.

You broke my heart with this move Dell. Bring back The Chief and all will be forgiven!

Honestly, who did you people think we were going to get with 2 mil?

Paying him over the minimum is a waste. He's inconsistent, old, and no longer a great defender.

For the minimum, he'd be fine, but at $600k over the minimum, he's a waste.

This smells like Monty "Proven vet" crap he pulls every year

Him and Monty played together on the 76ers, so I'm guessing Salmons is the new Willie Green.

Aminu is so useless. No thanks, so glad he is gone.

I'm not worried about $600,000 of Benson's money. If the only impact of this is that the old man's pocketbook is a little lighter, then so what?

If we just used up our opportunity to get someone good, though, then I'm going to be disappointed.

Salmons has shot 42% on spot up threes over the last two seasons. That's better than anyone any fan wanted, and I think that's what Dell was looking for. A guy that is a threat from the outside and can be trusted. Guys like Jordan Hamilton and Wesley Johnson don't give you that.

What pray tell should we use that extra $600k on instead? I would think if we had a shot at a better player with the full RLE we'd have gone that route. Being fiscally conservative once you're over the cap is kind of pointless if you don't have anything else to spend the money on. Also, $1.5 million trade chips don't usually get you much, so I'd argue you should overpay him up to the full $2.7 million exception unless you have other plans with the remaining $2.2, which presumably is the case.

I thought you were kidding until I looked it up. New Willie Green it is. Sorry Tyreke

So we used Bi annual exception here and still have room level? Would be OK with that, but wasn't sure if we had BAE available still.

We don't know. You can break the MLE/RLE up into multiple players, so Mason at BSS is assuming we did the minimum plus about $550k of the RLE leaving us with about $2.2 remaining in the exception.

Is there a way that we keep both Casspi and Salmons?

If we can limit the amount of minutes each guy gets say maybe Casspi gets 10 mins, Salmons gets 11 mins, Reke gets 27 mins at SF; I think it covers up the hole at the 3 good enough for the options we currently have

Obviously you can change up the minutes a little like extend Salmons or Casspis minutes so Reke can be the "1" or "2"...or you can even put in Ryno for those Ryno/AD/Asik lineups at the "3"

Anyway just a thought since now we don't have the money to grab Marion or anyone else...I don't think we should get rid of Casspi if we don't need to

I'm ok with this.

I would expect Holiday, Davis, Asik, Gordon and Evans to get 30 MPG and Anderson to get 25 MPG. That leaves 65 MPG to distribute to the rest of the roster. Salmons isn't gonna get more than about 15 MPG or so. He can hit the corner 3 pretty well and I doubt he's a sieve on defense (he used to be pretty solid and I'm sure he's lost a step since, but he's not that bad).

And if he is playing like 30 MPG Monty should be fired and we'll bring in a coach who won't do that. Ezpz.

Dell did this to create an asset to be used at the deadline...we will be able to take back up to 150% of salmons expiring salary ($5,000,000)...we could also package a player or 2 in a trade as well...Dell is thinking ahead to get a legit 3 during the season

I was suspecting this. If Salmons is the best we could get, it makes sense to overpay.

He's only making $2m this season, so $3m would be the max return.
