What should the Pels do if Holiday doesn't re-sign? Looking at things objectively, he didn’t play very well since the Boogie trade. Does Jrue want to stay? How do we make the playoffs next season if Holiday leaves and we get no compensation for him?

No doubt, the simplest way to the playoffs next season would be to re-sign Holiday, while adding both a perimeter wing and a ball-handler (with the MLE and trade). If Jrue leaves, a sign-and-trade would be useful. I think it would be naive of us to expect this scenario though. We should plan for the worst, in case plans A and B don't come to fruition.

We aren't dead in the water if we lose Jrue, there will be a few FA's available that could have a similar impact as him on the Pelicans. It would make sense to sign one of the following: Rose, Hardaway Jr, Snell, Teague, Tyreke, Hill, Mills. We would still be in position to trade for a player like Bledsloe, Rubio, Clarkson, Crabbe.

Worse case, our roster would look like this to begin the season:

PG- Clarkson/ Frazier
SG- Hardaway Jr/ Moore/ Crawford
SF- Hill/ Young/ Pondexter
PF- Cousins/ Cunningham/ Diallo
C- Davis/ Asik

Honestly, him leaving isn't the worst thing that could happen to us imo. Signing him to 5 years $125 million would be worse. But we would most definitely have to make another move to get a floor general here and someone to replace his shooting. I think we can get one or two of the guys from that list of players you gave (hopefully not Rose lol).

AD would want to strangle you if he saw this

Scenarios:

1) Just re-sign Cousins now using the space so you have him locked down and make a bunch of minor, flexible moves. You won't be a super great team next year but you will be flexible and locked in with two stars.

2) Renounce everyone you can, move QPon/Ajinca into space, stretch Asik -- In the hopes of signing someone like Kyle Lowry.

3) Operate above the cap, move pieces for someone like Rubio, use the MLE, other exceptions available, run with what you've got, stay flexible.

That is VERY dependent on whether he leaves via a S&T or not. If Holiday walks without a S&T and you stretch Asik, you've only got $19-$20 million in cap space and the Room Exception. I'm not sure what you do with that when you'd need a starting PG and SG. It's enough to get a decent starter at 1 position but not both.

Another direction to take if Holiday walks is to stay above the cap by flipping Asik for more salary like Asik and Toupane for Crabbe.

I personally hope we pull off the miracle Asik for Matthews deal (hoping the Mavs fall in love with Redick) and then sign Simmons with the MLE and Casspi with the BAE.

Draft Nigel Williams-Goss
Trade Frazier for Kyle O'Quinn (use TPE)
Re-Sign Dante Cunningham

Holiday / NWG / Cook
Matthews / Moore / Crawford
Hill / Simmons / Casspi
Davis / Cunningham / Diallo
Cousins / O'Quinn / Ajinca

I would be very happy with that scenario ballhawk.
I like O'quinn on this team. He's the exact guy you want at center when one of AD or Cousins is out. And id love to get Simmons but i dont think hes goinf anywhere unless spurs make a big signing like CP3.

I wish we could re-sign Boogie now. If he had made one of the All-NBA teams this year, our chances would be better (he would have qualified for a larger contract). If Cousins is ready to sign, the Pels would extend him immediately.

I think the Spurs have a decision to make on Simmons and Mills. I think they keep one, not both. Mills seems more likely to stay IMO.

I'd take White too, but I'll be shocked if he's there.

Can you explain this part? The TPE cannot be combined with anything else in a trade. If your idea is to trade Frazier and the TPE for Kyle O'Quinn, that won't work. I could be misunderstanding what you are saying here, though.

ETA: If they don't want one of Cook or Toupane, they could trade Frazier and one of those guys for O'Quinn (if the Knicks would accept that).

Wrong, he does not qualify for DPE because he has been traded from his original team after 4 years of being there.

Cajun, good catch/call.

I guess it would be have to be two separate deals.

Our TPE is $3m, O'Quinn makes $4.5. Frazier is at $2.2m.

Frazier to NYK into their cap space

O'Quinn to NOLA using exceptions...or can two exceptions not be used on the same trade?

TPEs can't be combined. Frazier makes 2m, Cook or Toupane are at about 1.3 (unguaranteed) which would work for O'Quinn's salary.

Ah yeah I always forget Toupane. That's assuming their contracts will be grandfathered in to new CBA trade rules.

That only changes my scenario slightly.

Frazier and Toupane for O'Quinn

Keep TPE and even better I've kept the 2018 pick

If Boogie can't get a bigger contract after next season (even if he makes an All-NBA team), there's no reason he shouldn't sign an extension now.

To be clear, we can still offer him more than other teams.

If we can get any of the following at #40, I'll be happy: Hart, Sumner, Jackson, Mason, Evans.
