Let me know if I'm a complete retard or if I am missing something.

As far as I could tell, the rockets made this deal with us to clear space to make a run at LeBron or Melo. At the moment, it looks unlikely they get either. I've heard Bosh is a possibility but let's assume they don't get him.

Can Houston pull out of this deal because they were unable to get any of their guys? As far as I can tell the deal doesn't become official until July 10th

What am I missing here?

And because Asik doesn't fit with Howard.

Absolutely, but it would look really bad on their part and damage their credibility among potential trade partners.

I'd imagine not. GMs seem like a pretty tight group, and it would be bad business. If they backed out of something that was already agreed upon, it would be difficult for anyone to want to do business with Morey/Houston again. They would probably be looking to move Asik anyway without any hope of LeBron or Melo.

Possibly, yes. Practically, no.

It is being reported as a done deal. There have been multiple reports of a Lin trade as contingent on Houston getting a commitment from someone, no mention of the Asik trade in a similar manner.

Why wouldn't Houston back out?

1a) They have been trying to trade Asik since the beginning of last year, wanting a 1st has always been the reported asking price.
1b) Other teams were mentioned as interested in Asik, but these were bad teams, the Sixers and Celtics. They would have traded a 1st for him, but the protections on the 1st for a bad team would effectively make it a 2016 or 2017 pick vs. our 2015 pick.
2) Houston would be paying $8.4 million cap dollars and $15 million real dollars for a backup.
3) If Houston doesn't land a big fish, it's looking like they'll have to pay a lot, maybe even max money to keep Parsons.

Trading Asik will make sense to Houston regardless of what happens, and the Pelicans will still be the best offer, the reason they traded him to us in the first place.

Yes, they absolutely could end up hanging on to Asik. Which wouldn't matter to a lot of the posters here. They'd still be "gung HO IM IN LIKE THE PELICANS! "

I'll probably stop following the pelicans if that happens. Basketball altogether really. It's not what it used to be anymore. Too many lebrons and melos and dwayne wades and dwight howards to enjoy our local team. The pelicans are always "waitin" while the teams that want to compete for championships make bigtime moves.

This offseason the Pelicans have me pretty flaccid. I'm not getting the urge to fap, at all. Not that other teams have done anything yet, but when we have a small market team struggling to be competitive I need something to be hopeful about. What we currently have isnt doing it for me when I look at how last season went.

last season was an injury plagued disaster. no team in the league could've succeeded with that many of their top players going down for extended periods (except maybe the spurs). adding asik has me erect. he is the perfect complement to AD and will enhance our team greatly.

As others have mentioned, their credibility would be shot if the retracted on the verble agreement

You mean back when games were on tape delay?

Or back when it was Jordan, Jordan, Jordan, Jordan, Jordan and Jordan?

Technically speaking rockets could back out of the trade. But that's not going to happen. They would lose credibility for future trades. Also, what motivation do they have of taking back the trade, they never had asik in the future plans of the franchise after singing Howard. With this trade they free up a lot of cap space and get a first round pick. There is no downside for Houston.
