David Griffin tells us Zion is an elite athlete and in elite condition. Says weight wasn’t an issue in the injury. Says Zion never had swelling the knee and wasn’t experiencing much pain. Still not sure when it happened.

Encouraging to see that there was no swelling and not much pain. More indication that Aaron Nelson and his team are playing the long game. This is a smart decision. I have no confidence that the former organization would have caught and handled correctly.

If he’s still coming out and saying they don’t know how or when it happened, That’s scary.

Maybe if you have your shite colored glasses on... the injury was clearly minor enough that he practiced for days after the game where they anticipate it occurred. It makes complete sense that they wouldn't be able to pinpoint because he played through it without flinching.

I swear to frick y'all are already unbearable.

It’s scary because you don’t know the cause for preventative action. Was it due to a contact injury, non contact injury, stress on the knee due to his weight, past injury, or any other variables out there? Seems like they are treating it like a fluke since they don’t know how it happened.

I've mentioned this a few times but lateral meniscus injuries have very very mild symptoms. So it is likely that either 1) Zion didn't feel like it was worth mentioning 2) didn't feel much at all 3) thought it was just soreness to play through.

As for the "incompetence" on the Pelicans side, no one ever gets diagnostic MRIs on ligaments and joints unless it's mentioned to someone. Can't blame them if Zion never mentioned it

I’m definitely optimistic with our new highly competent medical staff. Under the old regime he’d likely still be playing.

The cause for preventative action has been largely publicized on every corner of the Pelicans media presence. They are handling Zion with extreme caution and have never been shy about it.

As Pelicans fans we're not accustomed to "preventative care" or "proper diagnoses".

Handling of his recovery isn’t the issue here. The issue here is that he was injured and they didn’t know for how long, when, or where it happened. Williamson is like a football player, unless his leg falls off, he’s probably going to play through it without any complaints. So unless he mentions it, the staff won’t be able to identify it. And may not mention it fast enough to prevent further damage. That’s where the issue is and that’s where the concern is going forward. He could potentially play through injuries and make it worse before the team identifies it.

I see where you’re concerned.

Make no mistake, this is still an injury and he had surgery. And that is not as good as having no injury and no surgery at all. We need to be aware that there could be complications and there is risk involved. So many factors that we don’t know will determine that

However, even if he’s had this for a long time, there’s a pretty low chance it negatively effects his prognosis. Also if he had a medial meniscus injury or an ACL for example, he’d feel the pain/discomfort much sooner, as in immediately. If you have those injuries, you’ll remember the specific time you felt something give. Where as they cannot pinpoint an exact moment Zion felt this happen. Lateral meniscus injuries have less symptoms therefore a higher likelihood he’ll try to play through it. So while yes there are concerns, those particular ones you mentioned ar one's you can lay to rest

Here's the video of Griffin answering questions about Zion LINK

quote:

I've seen a lot of the narrative out there about him, that this happened because he's not in shape and he's too big, that kid's a freak of nature. When he went through his physical he ran on the treadmill longer than the cardio stress test people have ever needed to put anybody through a test to get his heart rate up...He's in elite condition.
