“[Davis] has to find another way to help us,” Gentry said. “They did a good job. They’re not going to let him catch it and iso and beat him, so he’s got to find other ways to do it. He’s got to become a screener. He’s got to become a guy that gets out on the break. He’s got to become an assist guy.

“There’s other ways that he has to help us if they’re going to play him to the point of where we can’t throw it in to him. And the other thing is we can’t hold it and aim, aim, aim if they’ve got a guy in the front and back. We’ve got to get the ball moving.”

What he said is fine if he would take responsibility too. "We need to find different ways to use AD when other teams take him away." Blaming your star player Uncle Al? That will work out well.

He's not wrong. But he also has to take responsibility, like you said. You need to find ways to get your star player touches. And AD needs to do a better job of demanding the ball

But that's cool, the more he shits on and pisses off AD, the faster he's gone.

Well no shite coach. Good luck prying the ball from Stephenson's or Moore's hands last night.

Holy shite this team is a disaster. AD can only do so much when everyone is pinning against him. We have a top 5 player and a bunch of scrubs. Is there any wonder why nobody shows up to the games?

Did you miss parts of your own article lol?

quote:

I’m sure I’ll second-guess myself and say I probably should have had him in there more,” Gentry said. “Which I always evaluate myself before I evaluate anybody else. I’ll look at it, and I’ll see. You might have a good point there.

Not knighting for Gentry but he does seem to at least pay lip service to self criticism.

So, he should have never said what he said the way he said it. You want to call out a player for effort or not executing your instructions, fine. but you don't call him out for not implementing a strategy, that's the coach's job.

It's the coaches job to run plays to avoid that from happening and to find ways to get Davis the ball where he wants it.

Is Frazier a defensive liability? He seems to get this team into its offense quickly. It was a black hole with Lance controlling the ball last night.

He is but I don't think it's been so bad that you play Lance instead of Frazier at the end of games. I guess the thinking is maximizing 2 way players on the court at the end, but his abscence at the end of the last 2 has been noticeable and curious.

And with Jrue coming back eventually, I would think that now would be the best time to play Frazier as much as possible. He's putting up great numbers and could be a trade asset if Gentry prefers Galloway or Lance long-term, though I don't know why he would. If Frazier keeps it up, he might even be enough to dump Ajinca or Asik for nothing or an expiring.

That's different from saying he didn't take responsibility too. He did. Which is what you originally said. Which is what I commented on.

I wasn't trying to be confrontational with you, just casually and light heartedly pointing out a correction to your statement.

I honestly agree with your overall commentary.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same things or maybe we're coming at it from different angles because I don't see how the quote you pasted impacts what I said.

I don't think Gentry is actually scapegoating AD, I think he is as frustrated as anyone and misspoke. But he misspoke in a way that looks like he's blaming his star player for not doing something that is on the coaches to put in place. This team is in a potentially toxic enough place that it doesn't need any accidental fuel thrown on the tire fire.

context matters. tone matters.

if someone asked him about Davis not getting enough shots and he replied like this in a measured tone, no big deal. and he's probably right.

if he just dropped this, unprompted, with an exasperated tone...that's an issue

Why would they be planning to tank when they were an improving team under Monty, making the playoffs for 1st time since before CP3 left? They already have their franchise player and they've got 4 years to make this team into a title contender before AD hits free agency. He'll be 28 by then at that next contract will carry him through the end of his prime. He's not re-signing here if Loomis and Demps keep putting together terrible rosters paired with a bad head coach.
