ESPN: Pels just a player away from upper elechon Super Team

New Orleans Pelicans
Stars: Two (Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins)
SuperPoints: 21 (Davis 13 and Cousins 8)
And this isn't even counting Jrue Holiday, who was a 2013 All-Star, but too early to qualify for this list. No one is calling the Pelicans a superteam yet, despite Holiday's $123 million contract that could balloon to $150 million, according to our own Adrian Wojnarowski.
No one can boast a Twin Towers frontline as formidable as New Orleans' version. Fit is a real concern here, considering the Pelicans went a disappointing 6-11 with Cousins in the lineup next to Davis. An offseason should help Alvin Gentry and his staff maximize their talents.
How they move up: It's hard to see how Holiday, even with a healthy full season, would beat out a loaded West backcourt to another All-Star bid or All-NBA team. Crazier things have happened in this league. The real problem is that the team lacks movable assets to exchange for the third star.
For example, Solomon Hill, Omer Asik and E'Twaun Moore will make $31 million combined next season and they ranked 126th, 204th and 286th in ESPN's RPM last season, respectively. However, the team does have all its first-round picks going forward.

You did a poor job of setting the OP up. It seems like incoherent stream of consciousness from a giddy homer. It's nice to see the ESPN so excited about the Pels.

That order surprised me.
Solomon Hill: 0.43 RPM (-1.06 ORPM, 1.49 DRPM)
Omer Asik: -1.03 RPM (-2.97 ORPM, 1.94 DRPM)
E'Twaun Moore: -1.82 RPM (-0.24 ORPM, -1.58 DRPM)
The thing that concerned me last year was pace+rating
8th in pace
26th in rating
defensively, we were solid: 9th
Its one thing to be fast and efficient. We're fast and inefficient...which means we should slow it down (Hi Monty) and get more efficient shots off while maintaining our defensive effort.
The argument as to why is a 51 win playoff team:
30th in pace, 12th in rating
3rd in defensive rating
I hate to say it, but I miss Monty

Good thing this franchise has such great history of utilizing draft picks.

I was a big Monty hater, firing him after the playoff season was dumb. Didn't he only have one more year left on his contact?

No idea but he had a great relationship with AD and if the Cousins trade still happens, my goodnees. This team would have done well under him. I still think Al won't frick up next season and if we get Boogie to resign I don't see us letting Gentry go.
IMO Demps has to go next year and the new gm fires and replaces Alvin the first year he misses the playoffs, or doesn't make it past the first round in two straight years.
The key, however, is the replacement hire and who is available, as we've all learned.

How is this any better or more effective than more conventional line-ups with a great PF and a great C. Like the Grizzles a few years ago with all stars Randolph and Gasol. Or like the Clippers with Griffin and Jordan. I'm really curious why playing two Centers together would be better?

I think one could easily argue that Davis and Cousins are the best 2 players out of everyone you listed.
I don't think Holiday is as good as Conley or Paul though.

Am I delusional/uninformed or isn't AD supposed to be more of a PF? I thought there was some talk a few years ago that you wanted more of a true center to play next to him because he was more of a natural fit at that PF spot, at least with traditional, possibly obselete views of positions. Seems like this "two centers" meme started just as a way to discredit the Boogie-Davis pairing. Though it is a sure thing that this is going the opposite way from what the trend of the league has been the last few years.

That's how AD views himself and is why Demps locked Asik up for 5 years.

That's what I was thinking about. Obviously that failed. Asik sucks. But was it more than just Asik sucks? Is there any substance to AD's view of himself? It might just be an unanswerable question.

Fair enough. But even now they aren't that far apart. NBA.com put out rating of PFs (LINK /) and Cs (LINK ) for last season. Davis was #1 at PF, Griffin was #2. Cousins was #3 and Jordan was #7. Seems pretty close..

I'm not arguing against your point, just bringing up counterpoint because I'm not sure there is a right answer. I would also say that Davis and Cousins can stretch the floor better than the others and probably create more problems for defenses.
Eta: I meant as a tandem, obviously Gasol is a very good shooter.

IMO, Cousins is better than Griffin. Much better. He can do everything Griffin can and then some (i.e. shoot from outside).
Also, I think a case can be made that Cousins is a C and not a PF.
