From what I’m hearing, I’ll be surprised if Alvin Gentry and his staff DO NOT get one more year to coach the Pelicans.

EXCELLENT insight from @FletcherWDSU on the David Griffin hiring and what it means for New Orleans, most interesting part is that Fletch believes that Griff is leaning towards keeping Gentry; look for interview on demand on LINK in a few minutes

This seems to have been the story all along.

I understand the reasoning, but it is really, really going to turn off a large portion of the fanbase.

We all know that Gentry is a nice man but a really bad head basketball coach. I would just end it and start over. HC's are a dime a dozen in the nba and are fired with regularity.

I think it's less to do with Gentry being the "best guy for the job" than it is that Griffin has so much more on his plate that he'll give Gentry another year to help stabilize things. He needs to build his staff which includes upping the scouting department, hiring a GM, then he needs to prepare for the draft and AD trade and is starting up a new G-League team...I think the HC is something that can wait in this case because Gentry's system is good (his decision making isn't always) and players respect him as does ownership and Griffin (previous exp with him in Phoenix)

two things:

this is a huge transition year obviously in the front office ranks and the staff built underneath. It doesn't overly bug me if we have a transition year under same staff that bridges the transition and allows Griffin to put his focus elsewhere for 12 months...

BUT...

are we passing on better qualified coaches in the meantime? would griffin have eyes on certain coaches not available now or are we just waiting for the sake of waiting.

I mean who is, honestly, out there right now? Ham or Finch maybe but you already have Finch on staff and you can keep grooming him another year to be head guy. Ham is in playoffs so you wouldn't be able to interview him until later.

Messina? Different system. Walton? Already gone to Kings. Joerger? No thanks.

This is what they are selling to people but its a load of horseshite. Organizations regularly fire GMs, Presidents, etc, have to totally restructure front offices, and they still hire a new HC.

They are doing this because Gayle likes Alvin, most likely. He's a nice man. It is what it is.

As much as I think Alvin is a bum of a HC, I'm not going to get bent out of shape over it. Hopefully all it is is a transition year.

Who out there is better? I’m fine with keeping Gent another year. It’s not his fault AD quit.

That's kind of where i'm at as well.
If there's a homerun hire you think is out there, then go do it now. If you're not overly impressed with anyone at the moment, then fine, lets go another year with Gentry.

As i said in the other thread, i just don't want this to drag out where we start improving and are maybe a .500 team or something and they keep Gentry for longer. He's not a good head coach, never has been, and never will be, but i have a lot of respect for him.

Considering the money being paid to Gentry and the general chaos in the organization right now, I’m not surprised.

Between trying to fix the entire front office and trying to flip AD so we can move on, the coaching staff is so far down the list on priorities it isn’t funny. Why waste time dealing with that right now when there are bigger fish to fry?

Do they do all that AND have to trade their franchise superstar and totally reset their roster all in one season? Heck, in a two month window?

Look, it is possible and if there were some superstar coach out there right now, they might do it. But why not just use this year to evaluate some of the left over staff, keep some continuity to provide some stability for the leftover players and then make wholesale changes if need be next year?

What I think you are discounting is what these players have just gone through. The AD situation rocked the organization and they forged a bond with the coaches through that. Now, you are going to completely take that away from them and ask them to just trust in all these strangers. Again, its possible but not the best course of action IMO.

Griffin needs to come in this year and establish himself and his vision, then he can hire a new coach next year after he is established. He hires a new one now, and that coach could grab some power amidst all the chaos. And again, what great no brainer coach is out there that is a different level than anybody who will be there next year or the year after?

David Griffin has spoken to several Pelicans staffers this week. No decisions yet on whether he’s cleaning house or keeping people in place, but sounds like he will give Demps’ staff a fair shake, while also adding people he trusts. Expanding the size of FO certainly helps.

As far as coaching staff goes, I’m told no public, final decisions there yet but Alvin Gentry and Griffin go back a long way. They have a good relationship and know each other’s strengths. I believe we’ll learn much more about Griffin’s thoughts during his press conf this week.

quote:

If forced to make an educated prediction:
- Gentry stays for 2019-20 season on his current contract.
- Griffin hires several high-level front office folks but keeps several currently employed by the Pels who are still under contract.
- Major growth in scouting dept.

Why would she do this?

She's already shown, (It's obvious to me) that she is committed and serious about building a winning team in NOLA with the Pelicans. Why would she go to the lengths only to play hard ball on the issue of HC because "He's a nice guy"?

That seems like a painting over the rust move, and she doesn't seem like she wants to just paint over the rust. She seems like she wants to invest in fixing the problems.

I don’t think I woul label Gentry a “bad” coach,
Based on his tenure in N.O. , but if he’s nt the coach for the future, it’s probably best to cut ties now. He is well- liked by the Benson
brain trust. And, apparently, by the players.

Do you think we get a better coach today if we fire him, given the upheaval in the front office and with the roster?

I think we get a chance at a much better coach next year if they know what the roster will look like and Griffin’s work in the front office has started to pay off.

I don't think she's "playing hardball".

I don't think she told Griffin "you must keep Gentry".

I think she told him a preference, and Griffin, since he knows Al, and DOES have a shitload on his plate, will probably let it go for a year.

Like I said, I get it, I understand the complexity of what's going on right now. Its the wrong call, but I get it.

pretty much anyone?

Gentry is one of the worst HCs in the league, if not the absolute worst.

Again, nice man. Great assistant coach. Completely awful HC.

I hope Griffin’s relationship with Gentry won’t affect his decision making for the 20/21 season. While I can understand how difficult it is to bring in all of his guys in one offseason, I fear he may keep Gentry for the rest of his contract at the very least.

So, let's just ignore last year's Portland sweep?
