There are several charts and numbers worth clicking on to see, but the bottom line is in the first 22 games we were a bottom of the league defense, in the last 11 we're averagish (16th) largely because more Holiday and Asik has lead to fewer attempts at the rim.

quote:

No Pelican puts greater downward pressure on attempts at the rim than point guard Jrue Holiday. When Holiday is on the floor just 26.5% of opponent shots come in the restricted area, when he sits on the bench it balloons to 35.8%.

...The other positive Pelican defender is Omer Asik. As I have noted before he keeps the ball out of the restricted area. Just 29.3% of opponent attempts come in the restricted area when Asik patrols the paint, that number grows to 33.1% when he sits. Ryan Anderson, who oftentimes replaces Asik in substitutions, has nearly the opposite effect; 33.7% on the floor and 29.5% off.

quote:

Last season the Pelicans ranked 30th in the league in attempts allowed in the restricted area. This year they're up to 12th.

Nice. I love him, but we gotta deal Ryno at the deadline for as high a 1st as we can get.

Defense usually takes longer to catch on than offense. It's definitely encouraging to see improvement

I've been saying on here that I wasn't convinced that Darren Erman all of a sudden forgot how to coach defense. It'll keep getting better if he's allowed to work.

He's having two guys who are major defensive liabilities play 30mpg. Don't expect too much until year 2 imo

Gordon and Ryan really needs to be dealt for a more versatile player. We already lack communication on D but to have those 2 safety cones just makes every thing worse.

Gordon's issue isn't his lack of effort but his inability to stay in front of a defender.

Communication, trust, an understanding of scheme and positions, and rotating. All take time and continuity. We are finally starting to see this pay off. IF We will see significant trades it won't be until closer to the deadline.

The Pels like our Jan schedule and think we have a chance to have a very nice January and make up significant ground in the west. We have 14 games in January. If we go 10-4 and see quality ball being played, even in losses we may not see a trade. Just depends on how Jan goes.

You think we may not even trade Ryno if January goes well? I thought Ryno was as good as gone by the deadline?

I mean, it's not like the deadline has passed. There's a lot of time for something to get done. I just thought it was a no brainer for Demps to sell Ryno assuming a reasonable offer was out there (which I'm sure there is).
