Not a surprise at all. Even if all he does is resigns with the Pels for the same amount with more years it's a move he had to make.

certainly the pels are better off without his 3MM on the books while they decide what and how they are going to proceed this offseason

We still have his bird rights, so what is his cap hold now that he opted out?

So we actually lose some cap space with him opting out and I assume we aren't going to renounce his rights because I would think the organization wants to bring him back. He is a good role player IMO and seems to love NOLA.

If someone like CP3 gives you reason to use cap space you can probably bring Cunningham back with the room exception if he's the best player under $5 million you can get. Otherwise you operate over the cap and keep his Bird Rights.

I agree with that and maybe my understating of cap rules is still flawed, but being that he opted out his cap number jumps to $4.5m instead of $3m he would have been, right? That would mean we lost $1.5m in cap room.

Also according to TBW we would have to use part of our MLE to bring him back. I thought because of bird rights we could just re-sign him without using one of our exceptions?

I'm not familiar with the article in question but what you posted is not correct like you thought. We have his Bird Rights even though he opted out. The situation where we'd sign him to an exception is if we operated under the cap and use the Room Level Exception. Perhaps they just worded that poorly because it's a relatively new exception that goes by many names. It started out being called Cap Room MLE. I've also seen Room Level Exception and Cap Room Exception.

Nah screw that. DC was very solid for us.

It was obvious he was going to do this, because he is worth more than that.
