Carmelo Anthony's people are trying a Hail Mary attempt to get him to Houston (Knicks won't do it) ... before he accepts a deal to Portland

I don't think that would make Portland better than us because you can't form a defense with just 2 defenders. We've tried that before, it doesn't work. But guys like Zach Lowe seem to think Melo fits very well there and would make them a lot better. I guess they could end up being a high powered offense like Houston with a good enough defense, but I really don't see how Aminu can guard the entire perimeter by himself. And if the perimeter is leaky that really reduces how effective Nurkic can be protecting the rim.

What would Portland be giving up to get Melo?

Gahhhhh I would love melo on this team now that the roster has filled out. He would create serious miss matches on offense and I think our overall defense will be good enough (much better than NY's) to cover up some of Melo's flaws.

You already know Cousins has tried to get him to waive his no trade clause to come here. Not sure why he would chose Portland over us. Makes absolute no sense Fit wise.

Wouldn't Portland be taking up a playoff spot though?

I don't remember if they were in last year

Lillard and Melo on the same team? Wow that would be the ball-hoggiest roster in the NBA

Plus the only players the Blazers have worth any value are Lillard and McCollum. Unless the Knicks front office thinks highly of Aminu, Evan Turner, and/or Shabazz Napier I dont see this happening.

Yeah how are they getting Melo without giving up McCollum? Unless they're giving up a few draft picks. And I can't imagine how bad they'll be defensively if they give up Aminu.

Gotta be a pick or two plus Harkless and Leonard?

Looking more likely that Melo may end up in Portland.
LINK

Who says no?

Portland and the Pels give up this years first.
So essentially NY get two firsts, Harkless for Melo.

We save 6M in salary by dumping Asik and Ajinca for Leonard.

Not ideal but atleast Leonard isnt a black hole, can space the floor out to the 3 point line, can actually move his feet and is still young.

That extra 6M will allow us to re-sign either Clark or Rondo or another FA if desired.

Gotta make a trade soon as if the Pels start winning that pick becomes less movable.

He's a stretch big that shot the 3 as well as Solomon Hill did last year and doesn't rebound. He's basically something you can get from a minimum or cheap player but he's on roughly the same contract as Asik with 1 more year. I'd rather have Ajinca at $5 than Leonard at $10. I wouldn't trade Asik straight up for Leonard let alone use a 1st to make that swap.

You wouldn't trade Asik straight up for Leonard? I know his contract is one year longer but at least he would contribute something. We aren't getting rid of Asik and/or Ajinca without giving up first either way.If it means we save 6M next season then I can't see many other options that are realistic.

No and for many reasons. First, the Pels are probably going to be in the exact same situation next year as they are this year bumping up against the tax and needing to cut salary because Cousins is going to be getting a $12 million raise. This team needs to dump $10-$15 million before next summer just to have a similar roster. If Cousins resigns it's because things went well and there are few players you could trade for or draft with that 1st that would be as helpful as having the money available to keep guys like Rondo and Clark.

Second, most people think Ajinca at $5 is an overpay and you want us to commit to paying Leonard $10 for one more year than Asik?! Look at their Career Per 36 and WS per 48 numbers. Ajinca and Leonard are pretty much the same tier of player. LINK

Finally, AD/DC should take up at least 68 of the 96 Big minutes per game. That leaves 28 big minutes to fill. At least 15 of those are going to a small ball PF like Dante or Miller/Hill. So there are 13 minutes left and you have Diallo and Ajinca available. Replacing Asik with Meyers Leonard is not going to significantly change the amount of productivity we get out of Asik's dead salary slot.

That savings comes mostly from moving Ajinca. I bet you can dump him for a 2nd and cash next summer when he's expiring like they just did with QPon. The way I see it you're just extending the Asik mistake, not even putting a bandaid on it.

absolutely not.

is something better than nothing, sure. but what he provides isn't worth the extra year of salary. That's how bad he is.

The trade wasn't that bad b/c it did save us some money for next year, but to be honest, i'd feel better if we were getting rid of Moore instead of taking on someone like Leonard. I don't want more bad contracts. I want guys like Asik/Ajinca/Moore/Solo going out, and us taking in either expirings or players who can start. We have $36M tied into those 4 annually the next 2 years. They don't provide anywhere near what you should be getting for $36M if you want to compete at the top of the conference.

Can't believe Dell doesn't get more flak for the Asik deal

It's considered one of the worst contracts in the league, people complain about it and talk about how we have to maneuver around it all the time, what more do you want? Should he have gotten fired for it? Yes. But what can you do? The POBO is worse at his job than the GM.

Whats worse is many on here tried to justify it when it happened, and said it wouldn't be that bad.

What happened 2 years ago is exactly what happened on a ending scene of the office when Michael went and bought a fur coat from Burlington before he got his bonus, and ended up not getting his bonus.
Moral of the story, don't spend money now b/c you expect to have more later.

We are getting closer to an end with it and i have my pelicans goggles on and think it will help us land an all star at next years trade deadline.
