Adding a modern Center without a “major” trade. How do we do it?

Let’s just say for the sake of argument that Griffin once again decides he cannot trade BI or CJ (or Zion), and wants to run it back sans Jonas

I’d consider moving any combo of BI, Z, CJ, Herb, Trey to be a “major” trade.

Cap and FA gurus: how would we be able to get a guy that’s fits better, or piecemeal the position with multiple guys?

What guys would be available for what we could give in FA (I assume some version of the MLE?)? What guys would be available for relatively minor player salary + a pick or two? (Or in a Jonas S&T? Are those still things under this CBA really?)

Or are you comfortable drafting a guy at 21 to start? (Kel’el Ware?)

Ware is probably the best modern Center at our range. But he's a rotational big like most of them in the draft and will probably be glued to the bench early on. I'd like is to add Olynyk to the roster as well.

I really like Isaiah Hartenstein.

Ware seems more of a project big. Despite his success, Indiana was still pretty bad.

Im not banking on Karlo but he had played well in gleague. Jamison played well in gleague as well and we let him get away.

Signed an extension in Toronto. Off the market.

BI for Jokic. I’d even throw in a couple 2nds.

Pelicans are actually linked to being interested in Claxton. Most likely a S&T. Supposedly a lot of people in the organization are big fans of him.

I’d let Jonas walk, hope Jalen Smith will take the full MLE, and pick one of the centers with our ‘24 1st (Ware, Filipowski, Missi, or even Edey if you want an old school Jonas type big).

If Griff decides not to make the "major trade," he could trade Dyson or Hawk for Walker Kessler. I'm not necessarily recommending that -- just showing it as an option.

Full MLE means you aren’t a tax team. Can they swing that? I haven’t looked at next year’s cap situation yet.

let's just get Goga Bitadze from the Magic for free.

he's 4th string behind Isaac, Wendall Carter Jr, and Mo Wagner right now apparently. he did a pretty good job protecting the rim when he was starting earlier in the season

I heard his price tag may scare Pelicans away.

Is his contract up?

The knicks have him and Mitchell robinson.

If I'm Griff I'm signing malik monk to the pels. Also trading for Caruso. I'd probably take monk and Caruso over cj

Edey

Way UNDER-rated as a pro prospect...there are some things he can't do, but many he can @ an elite level

Jemison was in the Pels summer league and in camp wasn’t he? He started for Memphis towards the end of the season and was pretty serviceable for being on a bad team. Only 24 years old.

Assuming no extensions/trades that change the numbers and Jonas/Naji walk, we are at ~$150M with 10 players for next year (Z, BI, CJ, Trey, Herb, Dyson, Larry, Hawk, Jose, EJ).

The full MLE is ~$12.9M. Luxury tax starts at $172M, so we would have ~$9M to fill 3 spots. The 21st pick is $2.7M, so we’d still have room to add essentially 2 minimum contracts and keep out of the tax.

I don’t see how we can to be honest. I know Griff wants Nic Claxton. That’s the worst kept secret in the NBA but I don’t think we get him because I think Brooklyn wants him back and signs him for more than we can pay him. Is he really an improvement though? You gain more mobility and rim protection no doubt but you also lose Jones’ offense and rebounding and must of all his size. Claxton is thin but long. Jonas can punish people with his strength. Also Claxton shoots free throws as bad as Shaq did while Jonas is an 80% guy at the line. That matters. I would try to bring jonas back in a 2 year deal if he’s willing to play ball a little and let us get a small discount. Instead of the $15 mil he’s making every year maybe we can get him for $11-12. Then you either take a chance on a young guy that has potential but hasn’t put it together or draft a big man to come off the bench and hope they develop. Actually someone like Jaxon Hayes would be ideal to come off the bench. I want Jonas back though. If we make a run and beat OKC or at the very least take them to the limit without Zion, Gayle may be willing to go over the tax line. I love Walker Kessler but I doubt you get him away from Utah. Jonas is 31 but he clearly still has something left in the tank. Give him a short deal and I’d love to see Karlo Matkovic be on the team next year.
