Anthony Davis + Ryan Anderson in the past two weeks (75 minutes together).

112.6 ORtg
93.4 DRtg (!)
77.4% DReb Rate

Has Darren Erman solved how to pair them together? If so what do you do with Asik and Ajinca?

I'm not so sure he has solved the root problem of AD not willing/able to play center full time. AD and Ryno together works, but Ryno played 267 minutes the past 2 weeks, only 75 of those were with AD. Ryno's On/Off court numbers are

On ORtg/DRtg
107.1/111.0

Off ORtg/DRtg
94.3/96.2

The offense improves 12.8 points per 100 possesions with Ryno but the defense declines 14.8, that's a net negative. And that includes the great totals he has with AD, so Ryno without AD is even worse. If they aren't ready to play AD at center full time then Ryno is hurting more than he's helping.

So, again, the problem isn't just Anderson. It's any big pairing without Davis.

Over the past 2 weeks, Anderson has abysmal Net Ratings with both of the other bigs (-24 w/ Ajinca and -23 w/ Asik in 80+ combined minutes). So Anderson has 75 incredibly effective minutes with Davis, 80 miserable ones with any other big, and another 100 or so minutes as the lone big, i.e. he is playing the 5. Anderson at the 5 is death for a defense.

Ajinca and Asik have -19 and -11 Net Ratings ON over the same 2 week stretch, while +1 and - .1 OFF for Ajinca and Asik. Davis and Ajinca only have 7 MP over the past 2 weeks, so that's irrelevant. But Davis/Asik is only + .3 in 50MP.

I don't see how this is solely an Anderson problem. More to the point, it's a bad grouping of bigs. Davis can make anything work, but playing any combo of the 3 other bigs was and still is a disaster for the Pels.

Now the question of Davis being willing to rebound like he has the past 2 games is fair. That is the only way the Davis/Anderson pairing can be effective on defense. Will Davis be able to keep it up without getting injured?

Hopefully learning the system will help, but it does seem like this is the case. And we are least committed to the big that has proven most effective with AD.

do either of you think it's possible that they could get away with Davis/asik/Anderson? As long as it's not against a dynamic wing?

I don't know. Ryno and Asik together were horrible last season with a -12.1 net rating. But if you resign him, do we want to spend $30-$35 million on bigs 2-4? It just seems like we could get a better mix with that much money, and if you asked me of the 3 which I thought could be a long term piece when they are competing for titles, it wouldn't be either of the 2 players we just signed to 4 and 5 year deals.

One thing I didn't understand last night was not switching out Ryno and Asik for offense/defense at the end of the game. If Asik gets a rebound call a timeout before he is fouled.

I don't think so. I'd settle for just Asik/Anderson being a viable option. Like ATL says, the data from last year is pretty conclusive that it won't. Maybe a faint glimmer of hope with Erman's scheme and a healthy Asik. But the Asik/Ajinca contracts look pretty horrible right now. I know they didn't have many other options, but minimum level guys wouldn't be much worse, right?

As for the offense/defense sub, it's a good point. Same time, matchups matter. I don't know how much value Asik really has when the opposing bigs are stretch guys like Morris and Teletovic. He won't be in the paint to corral rebounds and is more of a liability hedging than Anderson.

Iirc, Ryan typically starts out hot. Usually around the ASG he cools down.
