...because it is singularly unique to New Orleans. Hornets? Never seen one of those outside of Charlotte. 
While Jazz was a much better name than Pelicans, a couple other places have somewhat legit claims (excluding Utah, of course). But they should have just gone ahead and named us the New Orleans King Cake Babies.
I don't need tickets, I already have season tickets - I'm just establishing the correct answer here.

King Cake Baby isn't the best mascot in the league, that would be Hugo the Hornet.
