Which do you think is better:
ZZ Top 1971-79 or 1981 - present day??

Early stuff, no question and without hesitation whatsoever.

Fandango is still the best IMO. Side one recorded live at the Warehouse in N.O. 1974.

This should not even be a question. The MTV garbage is just that, garbage

Coming to the Saenger in NOLA 11/22!

I wouldn't trust anyone who doesn't love their first 6 or 7 albums run.
That said, if you've seen em in recent years, they've kind of settled on a third sound that's a little crunchier and bluesier than the MTV era and not bad at all.

Yes, I refer to this as, when they became a cartoon. Early years, they were a solid blues, rock, boogie, band. Never will have another like them (the early stuff)

As an avid ZZ Top fan, there are three eras. The first era is "First Album" through "El Loco." The second era (MTV era) is " "Eliminator" through "Antenna." The last era is basically what they've evolved into now. If you seem them live these days, you hear the MTV era songs played the way they play stuff now: hard, loud, and bluesy.
I like it all, understanding that it's different. My least favorite is the post "Antenna" albums, but I do love the last album that Rick Rubin did for them. It may be their best one yet.

Personally, I think Eliminator is their best. "Got Me Under Pressure" kicks boo-tay.

Early stuff was the bomb but I like all their 80s singles as well.
I read one of those MTV era albums (might have even been eliminator) was recorded on vox solid state "Beatles" amps. Just crazy to me that some of the pioneers of that overdriven blues would ever use solid state and not tube amps.

70's ZZ Top rocks the shite.
Besides the "pre-MTV" classics"--La Grange, Waitin' on the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago, Tush, Arrested for Driving While Blind, Cheap Sunglasses, etc--there are all the great deep tracks:
Beer Drinkers/Hell Raisers
Balinese
Blue Jean Blues
Apologies to Pearly
Just Got Paid.
Awesome stuff.
