Well he should of clarified.

Eta: Grunge was America's better version of Punk. IMO.

Umm, no... American punk came long before grunge and spawned the more directly related genre's of hardcore and post-hardcore... none of which were ever popular or mainstream...

Yeah whoops. I'm an idiot. What I'm trying to say is America took punk rock and made it better with grunge.

I didn't grow up listening to the Ramones or black flag so this is purely my opinion.
