Why am I regularly hearing a 4 year old Gotye song on pop radio?

I have observed multiple Top 40 / new pop radio stations recently playing this song from 2011 somewhat regularly:

Somebody that I used to know

Really, I'm not sure what constitutes pop radio these days. But, it's actually a pretty cool song.

My wife plays one of the pop stations on the house radio in the morning (The River???).

Everyday I hear a song from Uncle Kracker. Either "Follow Me" (fifteen years old), "Drift Away" (Twelve years old) or "Smile" (Six years old).

If these artists get paid by the spin, Kracker is the richest man in the world.

To answer the OP's question: radio has a place for not-new, not-oldie, still semi-popular songs called "recurrents". Wiki's take on explaining recurrent rotation

Good song, lead me to Kimbra after hearing her voice on that track.

She is absolutely amazing. Ive posted about her here before.

Two Way Street -Sing Sing Studios

Both of her Cds , Vows and The Golden Echo, are really good and well worth the listen.

PS. IMO she is hot as hell too, but I like that look.

Yea, shes great. The closest she has ever come to playing int he Gulf was in DC. She was at SXSW 2 years ago, but I was offshore and couldnt make it. The second I can see her live im going.

I don't listen to pop radio, but I've caught bits of it flipping TV channels. Some new show or commercial must be using it. Had the same reaction as the OP when I noticed it.

It's still played on Alt. Nation for some reason. Oh, and Kimbra killed the chick part.
