I play other instruments, but I want to get into alto or tenor sax.

Best bet would be going to a pawn shop and buying one that has a recognizable name. Be sure to look it over and that all the keys work properly and the pads seat well with the holes. After you buy I would take it to a music store and have them look at it and change the pads and any cork pieces that are worn down.

how much would one cost ?

I bought a middle of the road Tenor recently for right at 600$. An alto would be considerably less, 300-350 for a mid range alto.

Conn is a middle of the road brand. And Yamaha. Selmers as well

Haha, Selmers are anywhere from 3-5k, not middle of the road

Start Here at Amazon...

...or here.
I realize these are shite instruments, but you won't be out a whole lot of money if it doesn't go well. I've toyed with buying one of these, but have passed up on it because I have a Bell's Palsy induced case of TMJ. Whenever I try to play a wind instrument, my jaw locks up.
A long time ago I played a 1958 King Super 20. That thing was magical.
Good luck. Saxophone is a fun instrument once you get the hang of it.
