Where does Amy winehouse rank among female greats who died young?

I didn't listen to her all that much when she was alive but the more I hear the more impressed I am now.
I'd put her up there with Janis Joplin or Karen Carpenter for sure.

Are the GOATs for different reasons. AW isn't in their class.

Why? Is there a Halo effect associated with them because of nostalgia we associate with the time period...rise of the hippies, Vietnam happening or is it some baseless concept that newer artists can't compare talent wise "the greats" from the past?
What evidence do you have that makes those artists so much more deserving?

Janis was a genuine rock star & was only surpassed by a few; Hendrix being one of them. She was HUGE. Amy was good but never got to this level.
IMO Karen simply had the best female voice I've ever heard in any genre. It literally was perfect. People often dismiss her bc of the cheesy AM soft songs she sang but the woman had a voice.

I'd disagree - but being they all died too young, it's a given we'll never know how great they might ultimately how gone to be (or received).
With Karen you had a decade of music to judge her legacy, she had peaked and was the downward side of sales. While with Janis, Amy, Aaliyah, Selena.... you have a much more limited sampling and it's more subjective. As is, perhaps, their greatest works were still yet to be performed (or not yet produced for sale) and you yearn for more.
... if this wasn't just her niche, did she have a deep down fully grown women voice inside? Yes, the pain. But is there the Aretha, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Hudson, Etta James... lurking inside that Janis and Amy had?

Some valid points.
Music was changing & her health made it harder for her to tour. We'll never know if she/them would change or adjust their music style or not.
The big maybe here but the only 1, IMO, that had a chance to reach Janis' level of popularity was Selena; could she truly crossover? Who knows but she was very attractive & had a great voice.
Janis was not pretty (understatement), not talented with a good voice and was definitely going to burnout quickly; she burned her candle at both ends and several places in the middle. What she had was the 'it' factor; whatever that is....she resonated HUGLEY or BIGLY.
Vocally Amy was better than Bonnie but Bonnie could play a guitar very well. Aretha & Etta was way above Amy's level, IMO.

Amy was so dynamic.
So sad that she flamed out so soon!

I think the people that don't give her as much respect only know her from her "Rehab" song.
"frick Me Pumps" is one of the best songs of the past 15 years.

still agree to disagree
I'm guessing AW will too... All my lovin' (The Beatles's cover) ... my-oh-my was she good.
quote:...was aside of how she'll rate among the die-to-young. These women went on to have long evolving careers, and merely mentioned because of what Ms.Carpenter lacked (2me). And looks aside Janis w/Big Brother had a LP that spanned decades of later appreciation. Of course the availability of everyone always having HQ audio/visual recording with them is going to be a game changer from now on... so maybe future stars will have a bit better chance to shine on (and show other virtuosity)
