When Live Music Mattered In BR

It's time for a history lesson my young hipster friends! Once upon a time BR had one of the most vibrant live scenes on the planet, believe it or not.
We'll start with Independence Hall which was just north of the state capitol building. Bands I saw included Uriah Heep, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I don't think I paid more than $5 for any show I saw there. It could get really hot, but so many great bands stopped thru including one night with Hendrix and The
Monkees sharing the bill.
Then there was The Kingfish/Uncle Earl's in the Southdowns shopping center. So many great shows featuring up and comers like The Runaways, The Police, The Ramones, Elvis Costello, Muddy Waters, The Little River Band, Dickie Betts, David Allen Coe. It was an insane time to be a live music junkie and a real detriment to my wallet.
Then there was Chief's in the Kenilworth shopping center. It was there I saw SRV for the first time in '81 or so. $1.50!!! All the blues guys played there...Charlie Musselwhite, JL Hooker, Son Seals, many others.
The Bayou brought us REM. The Chimes was a mid-week stop for touring acts such as Roomful Of Blues, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and The Nighthawks. Both venues allowed my own band to play there many times. I'm sure some of you 50-somethings rubbed elbows with me at a few of these. Please remind me of some of the shows I've forgotten.
I left BR over 20 years ago. What's it like, now? Is there a scene outside of the World's Greatest Blues Jam at Phil Brady's or the occasional big production at The Varsity?

Oh look another "Well back in the good ole days" thread.
The generation that complains about the current state of it is the one that ruined it for everyone else.

So, whatcha got, hipster? I'm not complaining one bit. I saw some really great acts from a few feet away. Life took me to Seattle in '93. What's happening in BR now? I'd really like to know! Got links?

BR is basically the mecca of live music in the state

Local scene is slightly better than it was then. There's a couple venues that sometimes showcase local talent playing original music. Chelsea's, Spanish Moon, Blues Room, the Roux House, ect. The local scene was hurt hard when Mud & Water closed recently.
As far as touring acts, most still pass over Baton Rouge like the angel of death over a lambs blood splattered doorway. The Varsity occasionally nabs a big act, Chelsea's brings in good performers from New Orleans on occasion like Anders or Dumpstafunk, heck Bogies sometimes hosts Soul Rebels or Rebirth, and the Texas Club brings in the country acts. In Baton Rouge, during a calander year, most of the biggest names performing in town will most likely be country artists at Bayou Country Superfest.
There is a local music scene in Baton Rouge, but it can be tough to find if you don't know where to look.

Man, my granpa and uncle could tell you some stories baw. They go all the way back to Sam and Dave, Dale and Grace, Herman's Hermits, Donovan, the Who, Hendrix, etc.
They were all there making it happen.

It was more of a "Rock Scene" than it is now, but BR still has plenty of live music to choose from. Not so much the heavy rock hitters like back in the day. Rock venues like the J Club, Pappa Joe's, Sports Page, Rusty Nail, Kingfish etc. all kinda fell just out of popularity.
Blues scene here is top notch. Phil Brady's, Blues Room, Red Dragon Listening Room, etc. Quality local musicians make that scene as good as anywhere in the country.
Texas Club gets a bad rap for being in the hood and old as dirt, but this place is stall one of my favorite local venues for live music. Yea, it's mostly rising or old Country acts, but from time to time they will land a really historic rock show.
Varsity tends to lean toward the tastes of the college crowd for obvious reasons. I still catch a show there from time to time and love the place.
If you ever can catch a show at the Manship Theater you will be very pleased. Very nice and intimate venue, 1st class. If it is for someone you really want to see, the ticket prices are worth it.

I can say I've never been in this place, but grew up directly across the street from Mike and Mark Rogers.

Agreed. I'll be going to the "Home for the Holidays" show which was rescheduled for March 22nd with Benjey Davis, CJ Solar, and some other singer/songwriter types. Should make for a great date night with the SO.

He's never played the Varsity. Last show in BR was Chelseas in Jan of 2011.
OP- another big show was the Grateful Dead on their legendary 1977 tour. Show was at the PMAC.
