Joe Russo's Almost Dead - aka JRAD
Formed in early 2013 to perform a Grateful Dead cover show for some special party New York. The people loved it and they played a few more shows before doing extensive touring in 2014 and 2015 and gaining momentum with many recent shows being tough tickets, especially for a cover band. Their live concerts are characterized by high energy Grateful Dead covers with extensive improvisation (aka tasty jamz).
Joe Russo on drums and Marco Benevento on keys form the core duo with Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger on guitar and Dave Dreiwtz or however you spell it on bass rounding out the group.
They recently played two very high quality shows at The Joy Theater in New Orleans, and you know how the kids and their k around here can get overly fond of a certain group with a quickness.
The core duo, and all of the JRAD members, are quite talented and most have been playing together for a number of years resulting in a very cohesive unit. Many live recordings are available online both on youtube and a variety of music archive and streaming sites for your listening pleasure. You will also be able to catch them at approximately 30%-35% of the summer festival circuit.
It will be interesting to see just how long this group keeps it up; while Bustle In Your Hedgerow - the same group sans Tom Hamilton - has been around for a numbers of years they have not generated the same level of momentum as JRAD. Do these immensely talented artists continue to devote such significant time to what is a cover band, cover band which puts on an amazing live show, but a cover band nonetheless. Or will a short, fierce and ephemeral run be followed by a return to their various original projects. Only time will tell.

Really wish I had made it Friday night as well. Would have loved to hear Throwin Stones and Ruben and Cherise.
Nice review Eddie.

A JRAD is that feeling you get when you hold hands with your best gal.
