At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquility...what else?

If you want American bands then check out early Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and Overcast. As for Swedish bands, you could add Soilwork though I'm not a big fan.

In Flames is my answer.

Early Killswitch as in first 2-3 albums?

Alive or Just Breathing definitely. The stuff from when Jesse Leach was first in the band.

Slaughter of the Soul IS the Gothenburg Scene. Period.
Subsequent releases by some of the other mentioned bands barely maintain any semblance of death metal, whereas At the Gates was always very firmly rooted in the Swedish brand of death.
However, one of my favorite albums from that period was The Red in the Sky is Ours. It sounds like much more traditional death metal and is very low-fi in terms of sound quality, not quite on bar with black metal releases of the time, but it's definitely a few notches below Slaughter of the Soul. It just frickin' kicks arse.
The aforementioned album is the sort of work that is either immensely praised or incessantly condemned because it was so influential at the time of its release.

Katatonia
Does Katatonia really fit the melodic death metal label?
Their first two LPs and the first EP are unequivocally death doom with the slow plodding pace and intense vocals.
However, they involved into something almost completely apart from all of those other bands. They're almost alternative metal with the clean vocals, brooding subject matter, and melodic sound.

Would Blackwater Park fall in this category? If so, that.

Opeth's work is mostly considered progressive metal. They certainly display elements of both death guttural vocals and melodic instrumentation synonymous with the Gothenburg Sound, but I'm not sure how you could listen to In Flames or Soilwork and then argue that either band sounds like Opeth.
Regardless, that is a damn fine album. You have good taste, Sir.

I think The Textures - Silhouettes fits to some degree.
