A "great guitarist" is usually antithetical to having a great band. Guitarists, left to their own devices, will destroy rock n roll.
That's why Keith Richards is awesome. Play the f'n riff. The only people who want to hear you noodle are other guitarists.

Sounds right. I generally don't like much from the top guitarists lists.

Interesting.
I prefer extended jams with improvisational solos.
IE: Grateful Dead.
I consider Jerry to be one of the greatest ever on guitar.
Jimmy Page is my #1 and it has a lot to do with songs like When The Levee Breaks and In My Time of Dying. ETA: And his bow playing Dazed and Confused.

I would assume this was sarcasm, but given your Blink 182 appreciation...

yeah, there are always exceptions to the rule, but punk and post-punk (early indie) was built on the "No Solo" aesthetic... Nothing worse than a solo circle jerk during a live show...

, anyone can play barre chords. You can also play complex parts without noodling. I guess Tommy Lee is a great drummer, too.

They are also overly simplistic, generic sounding crap.... Maybe if we can throw in a singer that can't sing for shite we can call ourselves "edgy" and act like we're anti-trendy although we are the worst kind of trendy.

I get it. You like songs that top out at 4 simplified chords...

I just realized I posted in the wrong thread. Can an admin please move this to the Popular Opinions thread?

Thats obviously your opinion... but absolutely my favorite type of music.. alot of the stuff you hear today is heavily influenced by that generic sounding crap...
For me it's always been about the music and not musicianship... I can go 5 square miles from my house (NOLA) and hear people that can sing and technically play instruments better than many of my favorites... but thats all they got and why they are playing covers of other people's music in bars... Not saying there isnt a place for that, there is... more power to them...

So talented guitarists only play cover music? Is that your implication?

If that's what you took out of what I said, fine...
I get it.. you play guitar and love to hear other people play guitar... thats not what everyone else wants out of music...
I'm not sure if that link was a joke or what but it wasn't my thing...

I don't think you do. I actually don't hold "noodling" in very high regard. I don't like Van Halen and I think Joe Satriani is wanky. That said, punk rock is rock music with training wheels. To imply that Kurt Cobain is a "good guitarist" is just stupid. He is average at best. If you want to talk about his writing, okay, but his guitar-playing was average at best.
Also, I know quite a few people who can't form a chord that enjoy watching great guitarists.

Of course anyone can play it. that's why it's great. Rock is like folk music, music that can be made by and for everybody. Complexity is overrated. In fact, it tends to be bad in rock. Good in jazz or classical. Bad in rock, blues, and folk. Generally, there are exceptions.
But this idea that there should only be a small subset of people who could possibly play this stuff is crazy. Our band could be your life. The great thing about rock is that, literally, anyone can do it.

I never mentioned Cobain once in this thread... That said I always liked his "bad" guitar playing...

D Boon and Mike Watt would disagree...

All of the people who hate Kurt Cobain, and judging by this thread, there are many, only hate him because they are pissed he was the major contributor to destroying hair metal and that 1991 is a major dividing line when the majority of kids stopped paying attention to "classic rock". It's not that he sucks, it's that there is real envy there. How dare we not worship the Boomer gods?
And I say this as someone who is not a Nirvana superfan.
I think Kurt Cobain is the man. But I put Bradley Nowell on a very high pedestal. And not just because he died. Dude was just oozing talent.
