I was too young to really appreciate him in his Seventies prime. I was really first exposed to his music in the early Eighties in high school when MTV came on. I think the Ashes to Ashes video was the first time I even saw or heard of David Bowie. Probably 1982. I just thought he was another New Wave artist at the time. Man, when you listen to these old Seventies albums you realize he really pioneered New Wave and had to have been a huge influence on bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure. It is ashamed that it took his death to make me really dig into his old music. It really spawned the Eighties music that I grew up with in my teenage years. I don't think I really truly appreciated that until now sadly.

Bowie pretty much pioneered everything. Glam rock in the 70s, new wave music in the late 70s and early 80s, and helped make industrial rock even more popular in the 90s. He was at the forefront of every major rock movement since the 70s and was a pure genius. Everyone from Lady Gaga to The Killers to Nine Inch Nails would likely be nowhere without him.

Depeche Mode nerd here. Lead singer was actually discovered by the rest of the band while rehearsing "Heroes". Martin Gore covered a couple of Bowie songs on his Counterfeit cover albums. Most of the band members have sited Bowie as an influence during several interviews even stating that he was possibly the most "famous" person they've ever met in real life. Bowie's influence on artists I enjoy and respect is immeasurable. He defines legendary influence in music.

Bowie was a blowhard at times, and his lack of recognition of those who helped him, legendary.

That said, he did reconcile himself with Ronson prior to Ronson´s death, and was pivotal in Marc Bolan´s son´s proper upbringing (at least from a financial sense).

He was a genius, and was every bit as quirky and megolomaniacal as many can be.

I discovered bowie in the 80s. First time I got high was listening to ziggy stardust. It blew my mind.

I had several david bowie binges, but really he has fallen off the map for me recently. The wife can't stand him.

I was always partial to alladain sane.

BTW, I went as david bowie this for your halloween. I went as Major Tom. I am not posting a pic as ppl here know me IRL, but not that I post here.

My first exposure to him was the song 'Blue Jean', which I still love. His cover of Iggy's "Neighborhood Threat' from the Tonight album is great. Then it was about going back to his 70's work. For every artist who tries to reinvent themselves/look (Madonna comes to mind) owes him - no one did it better.

Dude stayed with his game to the end. No standards or country albums for him. Original shite all the way.

Went to the Shreveport Symphony show tonight with the music of Queen. Under Pressure was extra special,
