The Gourds

A lot of people think they're just a gimmick band because of their Gin and Juice cover, but all their stuff is real good. One of the band member's brother posts on TD too.

The Gourds are great but they aren't bluegrass.

Bluegrass bands need to be all string have a banjo as lead, mandolin, fiddle, and standing Bass player.

I realize there's a technical/traditional definition of what constitutes "bluegrass". A lot of bands will not meet that with complete specificity and still incorporate a lot of bluegrass elements. I'd argue, the Gourds clearly fit that bill.

They definitely have roots in bluegrass but they are more mountain rock. I don't think they have a banjo which is like saying you have a rock n roll band without a guitar.

The Gourds are not bluegrass. Neither is Mumford and Sons.

Why would anyone think that? They have a banjo but its played in the Irish style not a bluegrass style.

Listen to the O' Brother Where Art Thou ? soundtrack, or better yet watch the movie - that's fairly decent mix of the early stuff.

Obviously, Bill Monroe (and I'm not a big Monroe fan, but it is what it is), Lester and Earl, and, surprisingly, Steve Martin (yes - the "wild and crazy guy"/"The Jerk").

Also, the Alison Krause/Robert Plant stuff is very listenable.

One of the better banjo players out there right now. I got to set up his dressing room when him and the Steep Canyon Rangers played some charity event. He really likes to use handwarmers and diet squirt.

No love for YMSB? I know they broke one cardinal rule of traditional bluegrass (using percussion/set) but they have a good mix of original, traditional, and contemporary songs.

Their earlier stuff is much closer to traditional bluegrass than their last two albums.

Also, Old and in Way. If Bill Monroe plays with you, you are a bluegrass band.

Yonder is a pretty amazing band. I really enjoy them on long drives.

If you're just trying to get into bluegrass, try a bluegrass fusion band. Here's a tune or two from
Gangstagrass, which does the theme song for Justified, on the Fx network.

Here's the theme song to Justified. Their music isn't for everyone but I like the slower "attitude" they bring to the genre.

Greensky Bluegrass-Atlantic City (Springsteen Cover)

String Cheese Incident has some good Bluegrass stuff, same with Keller Williams, especially when they jam together

Time - Westbound Rangers

My best friends fiancé is related to one of the members of this band. Saw them live and really loved their music.

No mention of Chris Thile yet? One of the best bluegrass musicians alive. Whether it's his solo stuff, Punch Brothers (which plays way more than just bluegrass, but that's their bread and butter), or some of his collaboration work, the kid can play.

Chris Thile - Watch at Breakdown

Punch Brothers - Flippen
