This is the one that I believe is an R&B/pop type genre, but I can't name a single song of theirs so that should tell you that they are kind of an afterthought.
There's one big hint I could give but that would essentially give it away so I"ll hold off.

When you said you couldn't name any of their songs I knew it had be an "event" based hit, not simply because this person was a well-known and popular singer.
Hence, the Aaliyah guess, since she basically became known due to her death, and the American Idol thing was the only other thing that made sense as I couldn't think of a popular soundtrack with a female hit from it.
