Ended Saturday night w/ show in their hometown of Kingston Ontario, Americans never warmed to the Hip and for Canucks that was ok they were “our” house band – I would compare them to REM, Better than Ezra, etc. The show was broadcast live by CBC (Canadian NPR) on all platforms (web, radio, TV, etc) and was watched/listened to by 1/3 of the country. Lead singer (Gord Downie) has terminal brain cancer (same one that took Joe Biden’s son) and while he wasn’t his usual self he still performed for almost 3 hrs w/ terminal brain cancer. There were lots of watching parties, I had friends, neighbours and family over; put TV and speakers in back yard, sat in Muskoka chairs w/ a fire drank CDN beer and near the end of the show the screen was blurry, whole damn yard was blurry, there wasn’t a dry eye anywhere.
I missed out on the Hip mania in GWN as I was living in the great state when they hit it big but went to a show in 2000 and then w/ my son in 2013. They are a great live band and everyone I know who is around a half a hunnert has a Hip story of seeing them perform in the 80s at some bar or other dive on their way up. Below is link to Google search of final show, it was a big deal in GWN and a helluva celebration as someone pointed out to me about athletic careers we all know how it starts (peewee hockey, pop warner FB, etc), we never know how it will end and while it’s a shi**y way for the Hip to end, they went out on top w/ their boots on and we should all live like that.
