King Crimson and Porcupine Tree belong ahead of half of that list.

Would have never thought Cream to be considered a progressive rock band. Jethro Tull, Atomic Rooster, Gentle Giant and King Crimson come to mind as the pioneers of the genre.

Soft Machine and The Dixie Dregs, too.

I don't see how Cream is prog by any definition of the term. Great band, but they are a blues-rock supergroup.
Though they would chafe at the label of prog, I'm surprised Tool and Radiohead aren't on the list. As a general rule, I hate prog rock in nearly all of its forms, but I have a huge soft spot for Yes due to Steve Howe being awesome and having a terrific rhythm section which gives their songs some bounce.
Yes is pretty much the complete antithesis of what I like in a band, yet I really enjoy their music. So they get my vote as the best prog band ever. I want to hate them but can't.

Ditto. I agree that King Crimson & PTree belong on the list and I'd throw early Utopia in there as well (not the later power pop version of Utopia )

Also just noticed that Rush isn't listed....

Never heard of half these bands, terrible list. No Rush, Dream Theater, Tool, or any band that's been relevant in the last 30 years.

No King Crimson? No Phish? list is shite.

Danman is about to melt.
I'm just going to let Danman rank mine.
I'll just take off his #10 and add Rush.

6. KANSAS
7. MAGMA

the rest of your list outside of ELP is some tier 4 prog shite and should not be considered on an all time list.
where's King Crimson? Pink Floyd? Jethro Tull? shite even some of the newer metal oriented stuff i don't even like should be on there before fricking Kansas. christ.
like you have Kraan, a German band, over other German bands like Can, and Neu!. i don't get it.
that's a shite list

I did not grow up in the 60s and 70s... but every time you see one of these threads on this exact topic the list is usually the same.
Not having Pink Floyd over some of these others OP is insanity... much less the board not knowing who half this list even is
Other glaring omissions Queensyrche, King Crimnson and Jethro Tull
Sticking to times more familiar to me my list would look like this:
YES( because I loved them growing up)
The Mars Volta
TOOL
Porcupine Tree
Radiohead
Mastodon
Opeth
Dream Theater( which I am not a fan)
Dredg
Isis( a favorite band for me which I would consider their later releases progressive)

wait we can turn this into our own top 10 prog list thread?
Posted on 3/6/17 at 1:49 pm to danman6336
Gong is criminally underrated
While we're on it, where does the final "JERUSALEM" on Supper's Ready rank on all-time prog moments?

You're missing so many greats in that list. One I haven't seen mentioned yet is Änglagård.
