And why not?
England has the Beatles and you want to counter with fricking Stone Temple Pilots? Do I really have to elaborate?

Editing this because what I had before was pretty assholish of me to say...
But I will say that no, you don't have to elaborate because the UK owns this category. I said any one of those, and STP is a personal choice really. The other two bands listed have 14 Grammy's between them, so a case could be made, albeit a ridiculous one because no one will beat The Beatles IMO

if the doors are/is/be in the US top-5 then they stacked; we fricked. good god. lemme think a sec.
as suggested, i think we have to go blues, jazz and Motown. Also, southern and hippie rock. The other problem is the "bands" limitation. And, can we expand to North America?

Once you take off bands that aren't British off of that list and individuals who aren't bands (the old saying is that the US has better solo artists like Dylan and the UK has better bands like the Beatles). You have a decent list...
One that I think the US absolutely slaughters. The old slogan is just that, old. It was true in 1970, but it hasn't been true for a long time. There really hasn't been an English band I've loved since the Clash. Though if you expand the UK to include Scottish bands, then I have to admit I am a sucker for them. Actually, in this century, I think I prefer more Scottish bands to English ones...
Frightened Rabbit
Idlewild
Travis
Mogwai
The Beta Band
Sons and Daughters
Franz Ferdinand
We Were Promised Jetpacks

i vividly recall a friend of mine in the early 90s trying to get me to go to this supposed show. i remember thinking it was BS. now i'm thinking it could've been a stone roses cover band. that seems even weirder somehow.

It's because of American music that these Brit bands even exist, and if you include solo artists, we might edge them out.
But when it comes down to judging the two countries' bands, they kick our arse big time imo.
