I believe they certainly fit the mold. They changed music much like Nirvana changed the landscape, yet I believe The Smiths had a far greater impact than Nirvana.

(Rolling Stone voted The Smith the most influential band since The Beatles)

Some might agree, but FWIW Rolling Stone doesn't know their arse from a hole in the ground.

I definitely agree

Not necessarily true, but not necessarily wrong either. Paradox?

well they definitely did have a bigger impact, but its hard to say that the smiths were more influential than pink floyd, and led zeppelin.

You could also argue that other bands from rouhgly around the same time period are more influential - talking heads, sonic youth, and joy division were more influential.

And later on, there are other bands that might be more influential - the pixies and pavement - for instance.

Not dogging on the smiths, as they definitely were a big impact on the music scene. Certainly when I wore my acid washed jeans and black t-shirts, they were very influential to me.

Born in '92, I've never heard of the smiths..what reason would they get the title of ' most influential band ' ?

moooooe risss E
moooooe risss E

personally i loved meat is murder and it had a very huge impact on me in college.

however, the incessant whining and general shittiness of morrisey makes it impossible for me to enjoy any of their other work.

how soon is now is definitely top 10 for the 80s.

The smiths were great but I agree with the poster who said the pixies were more influential
Everyone who had any success in "alternative" rock for years after have given the pixies lots of credit for influencing their sound

I would argue that REM were more influential than The Smiths.

I can see the argument and would agree they are highly influential... but I may put a few before them..

Music snobs (which I'm not necessarily immune to) love to cover up the relative obscurity of "genius" acts by touting their influence.

Very smart statement. Did you know that Johnny Marr played with Modest Mouse?

They're pretty influential, I'd say. Guitar wise - absolutely. Lyric wise - absolutely. I'm more surprised that Rolling Stone would give a band like them that title. I'd assume they would give that to like Iggy Azalea or some shite.

I'm personally a big fan, So, I'm probably biased. However, they were one of the first "indie" bands that were critically and commercially successful. In that sense, they are probably indirectly, if not directly, responsible for the surge of the indie movement. Which has become a huge facet of pop culture and music in general. It makes sense. From the Beatles to the Smiths, I can't think of many bands that influenced music as an art as well as a business as much as they did.

edit: changed up the last sentence as not to sound absolute since I don't have a huge knowledge base of music and am not going to spend my time researching it.

re-listening to the smiths, its amazing how good he was.

they were popular due to the lyrics. nothing like being depressed when you are a teenager.
