Fortunate Son

This is what I was going to say as well. To me the most American anything is that which demonstrates the greatness of America, and to me the the single greatest defining characteristic of America is the first amendment of the US Constitution. I laugh and smh at the people who think guns are what protects us from our government. The one thing that those in control (the rich and the politicians) fear the most is free speech and freedom of the press. Information is power. That's why North Korea and other two-bit dictatorships control the media so heavily. That's why the "Great Firewall of China" exists. That's why that joke of a country, Russia, is now passing more laws to censor the internet.

The reason why Fortunate Son is so perfect is that it takes on those in power ("I ain't no senator's son", "I ain't no millionaire's son", "I ain't no military son"), all those war hawks who never served in the military and aren't willing to send their own sons to war. It took 200 years of court rulings to fully develop our current notion of freedom of speech, but we're in a good place now, and protecting and exercising free speech is the most American thing you can do.

My favorite "American" songs are marches. JPS was the best:

"Stars and Stripes Forever"

I suppose my favorite patriotic song is:

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic"
